I know the adage that self-hosting email is hard. I use a third party smtp server to send emails for my Lemmy instance in order to guarantee delivery, for example....
It's also quite useful to track who is selling your email address to third parties. If you register with me+acme@mydomain.com at acme.com and then receive spam at that address you know either acme.com had a data leak or they sold your email.
