Mastodon and the Fediverse are currently under a sustained spam attack. I'm really sorry if you're seeing a lot of spam mentions.
This attack is difficult to keep up with from a moderation perspective - and because the attack is coming from the thousands of instances that have open registration there's no effective way to prevent it until the Mastodon team decides to add more effective admin tools.
