OpenAI’s Altman and other AI giants back warning of advanced AI as ‘extinction’ risk. If Sam truly believes in the risks posed by AI, he should consider shutting down OpenAI. Power down the data center, delete software & models associated with it. I don't get his motivation here. What do you want, man? First,you say OpenAI is the best. Then, the next day you say it will pose a significant risk to the human race. So, shut down the OpenAI & move on with your life. Stop making up bullshit #ChatGPT

xexyl,

@nixCraft the answer to your question is money and power. And hypocrisy.

MadSc13ntist,

@nixCraft it is FULLY an act for hype. 💯

Honestly, it should raise an eyebrow when all of the people selling AI are also out there saying "oh no! If anything it's TOO powerful and amazing! Ignore that every public demo produces bugs/errors!"

It's bullshit. This whole situation rhymes with when people started hearing about crypto currencies but before they learned that they are all scams from the outset.

@nixCraft altman also started a crypto project recently specifically designed to prove when AI is being used and therefore combat all misinformation. It's a scam where they want to encode scanned retinas of everyone into a blockchain that they've premined %20 of. He's playing both sides, developing the problem, using fear as an awesome marketing tool to make it more useful and dip into everyone's pockets, then develop the solution and dip again. It's just trash.

@nixCraft

Reminds me of regulate me hard, daddy!

smjle,

@nixCraft Sam Altman is following the path of Elon musk, but much faster.

@nixCraft "This AI thing is really bad. Someone should do something about it." - OpenAI every week, right after making new features.

toastloop,

@nixCraft They're full of shit. The press release they put out was headlined "Top AI Scientists Warn: Risk of Extinction from AI on Scale with Nuclear War". When the actual document that was signed just stated "Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war." Sure AI needs regulated, but it doesn't need to be feared.

hitokiribattousai,

@nixCraft he wants to be the only kid allowed to bring his cool new toy to the playground and have others pay fealty to him to play with it.

drscriptt,

@nixCraft Attomic power and bomb come to mind.

There is no going back.

There is only going forward with caution and mindfulness.

Sometimes you don’t know how powerful, for both good and evil, something is until after you’ve done it.

Also, someone was inevitably going to do this or something like it.

Artificial Intelligence has been a pursuit for more than 50 years.

@nixCraft

if it's leading to Sam Altman's, and his ilk's, extinction... I'm pretty sure I can get behind that.

AlsoCrowie,

@nixCraft I hope this is a new next level @ExtinctionR prank

ferricoxide,

@nixCraft "If I don't do it, someone else will ...and it may as well be me who gets to enjoy the cash before Skynet kicks off Judgement Day."

@nixCraft Shut down and lose all that sweet, sweet Microsoft money? Never. This guy is a nut job. He’s begging for regulation and then the second he gets it, he’s going to start lobbying to loosen the regulations.

3lcid,

@nixCraft the whole idea here is to push for legislation to regulate AI and make entry into the field impossible from the perspective of small ventures and small businesses competing with “big AI”.

@nixCraft "it will kill us all, so invest"

hanfi,

@nixCraft What he wants? Simple:
Currently his product is at the top. But the tech is not that hard. Just requires lot of resources.
So how to stay at the top? Freeze the whole field! Regulations won't go back behind the current Situation. While it's possible, it would be hard.
He could try outrun the competition by innovation, bit that's hard and more resourceful players are nagging at his position.
Tech bros being tech bros.

@nixCraft
His motivation should be obvious
https://www.fastcompany.com/90902786/what-is-the-real-point-of-all-these-letters-warning-about-ai

>>"We’ll know it isn’t just theater when they quit their jobs, unplug the data centers, and actually act to stop ‘AI’ development,” says Meredith Whittaker, a prominent AI researcher who was pushed out of Google in 2019
<<

He wants governments to build him a moat, and to have a say via his proposed licensing scheme on who will be allowed to compete in the AI market, and be exempt from regulation by the FCC or any ethics body

ConnorMoran,

@nixCraft

Well, the actual policy he's asking for is a pause on people making LLMs more advanced than GPT-4, so I suspect the motivation is "it'll be easier to make money if everyone agrees not to make a product better than mine."

nixCraft,
@nixCraft@mastodon.social avatar

@ConnorMoran that is truly evil. He wants to be the next Google I guess

RandomDamage,

@nixCraft the "it's a huge threat!" noise is pure marketing.

"Our product is so powerful it could end humanity! Buy now!"

redmagus_clawmus,

@nixCraft like I said before, power and wealth at the expense of the rest of us. Let the gladiator games begin!
