I think the feeling is pervasive in every generation.

The old see decline compared to the days of their youth. But when they were young they were mostly blind/shielded from the reality of the world around them.

@Pons_Aelius Agreed. Especially because the "threats" and reality change drastically between generations. Researchers provide alternative explanations in the article, but I just assumed it was just because things had changed. Different makes people uncomfortable and equate it with a decline. It was a super interesting read.

... before society's conditioning to believe everything was cringe and that the innate ability to enjoy things couldn't be trusted... come to find out that self doubt was causing brain damage. how fun is that.... now all i hear in the melody is criticism.
