phitaylr,

Saw folks having fun here with Conway's Game of Life and wanted to have a go for myself with . I can definitely see students having fun building their own cellular automata

@phitaylr it’s an enduring pleasure of mine that my first experience of the game of life began with a Commodore VIC20 and a 10x10 grid. I still have the book I copied the program from.

I’ve lived to see the game of life running within the game of life on a grid size so massive it would probably not have been possible to recreate on all of the VIC20s that ever existed.

EDIT: It's a 9x9 grid!

phitaylr,

@DigitalStefan That is awesome! I found a video of the simulation running on a VIC-20, will definitely use that in class. I guess 1983 would only have been a few years after Conway developed. Would you be able to post a photo of the code? That could turn into a neat lesson for students.

DigitalStefan,
phitaylr,

@DigitalStefan This is amazing!!!! Thank you so, so much!

phitaylr,

@DigitalStefan I may turn this into a retro computing activity and have students type into emulator before they do their own version in Java. Thank you again!

DigitalStefan,

@phitaylr Google Drive link to d64 disk image: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1g4WD8fhweUp13L_AmXsHLMMa3FS0fd1Q/view?usp=sharing

Works perfectly with the VICE emulator https://vice-emu.sourceforge.io/index.html#download

The version I used was GTK 64bit for Windows.

DigitalStefan,

@phitaylr To get this working, attach the disk image to drive 8 and then type:

LOAD"*",8

Or

LOAD"LIFE",8

Then type RUN and hit enter.

phitaylr,

@DigitalStefan Amazing! Thank you so much, I know typing that in must have taken a while. Got it working on the emulator, can't wait to share with students!

DigitalStefan,

@phitaylr you’re welcome. Quite the nostalgia trip for me!

@phitaylr don't forget to add some alt text... Sometimes I paste some of the code/comments

phitaylr,

@villares
Thanks for the reminder! I'm still not used to that being a possibility

@phitaylr oh I loved the colour rule that makes cells brighter as they persist!
