comes from our past (things we regret, things that have happened, painful experiences that have implanted themselves into our nervous system, etc.)

calls to us from the future (negative expectation, worrying about what people will think of us, fear of change, etc.)

So the best place to be? In the now. Be and . Or at least try to be (I know, it's not always that easy). Kiss a loved one. Smell the air. Look at the clouds. Punch a brain weasel.

    @martijn Probably, I'm not clinically trained. 🙃 It's just how a psychotherapist explained things to me a long time ago, in order to illustrate causes of depression and anxiety respectively, and to emphasise the value of being present. The science on the "chemical imbalance" theory is pretty weak too (is the neurochemical imbalance caused by the depression instead, for example). c.f. https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/types-of-mental-health-problems/depression/causes/
