A long time ago, a particularly nasty ghost was banished to a forest to the west of Weißenhorn.

These days, the forest has been partially converted into an industrial park.

@juergen_hubert @germany @folklore Nasty is correct - I wonder if people at the industrial parks still experience his harassment.

@Ellirahim @germany @folklore Time to write a modern-day sequel story, I suppose! 😉

@juergen_hubert @germany @folklore Oh, that would make some heavy-hitting reading.

@Ellirahim @germany @folklore It's something I've wondered about more than on once.

I mean, the German folklore approach to malicious spirits was basically: "Let's dump them into a remote place in the countryside." But, well, most settlements have grown a lot larger over the centuries...

lbheuschkel,

@juergen_hubert @Ellirahim @germany @folklore We had the same approach in Denmark and someday, I want to write a story about some old malicious geezer who was staked in a remote field, having a jolly great time haunting the shit out of some polluting factory.

@lbheuschkel @juergen_hubert @germany @folklore It's pretty much the same in South East Asia - Got a malicious spirit? Seal it up in a bottle or some other small vessel. Ritually "fence it in" deep, deep within the forest. Things are fine for a generation or two -- until some greedy property developer, logger or miner destroys the ritual bindings. Plot for a perfect "Nature bites back" horror story.

And the forever classic, sealing it into a tree. That never, EVER goes wrong.

Of course, without that we wouldn't have the gem that is Final Fantasy 5 so truly mythology is a realm of contrasts.

@NinjaDebugger @Ellirahim @lbheuschkel Hey, it worked out great for Doctor Paracelsus - he got some cool stuff out of it!

littlejustices,

@juergen_hubert @Ellirahim @germany @folklore I saw a fun and interesting take on a similar idea on an episode of a children's anime show once. Centuries prior, a trio of spirits had been sealed in a large rock, a popular choice in Japan the same way trees seem to be in Germany. Flash forward to the modern day, and that very rock gets blasted into gravel to make concrete with. So then those spirits ended up hauinting every building made with concrete containing any amount of that rock.

@littlejustices @folklore @juergen_hubert @germany Ooooh. Do you have the title? I'd love to watch that.

littlejustices,

@Ellirahim @folklore @juergen_hubert @germany It was the 2018-2020 season of GeGeGe no Kitaro, specifically episode 3, it seems. Looks like it's licensed and available for streaming (subtitled) on Crunchyroll.
