Projects like pngme

Ive made a similar post in the rust magazine but was wondering if anybody has come across a project or tutorial like this?

Pngme is a tutorial with tests, a spec and some references to useful documentation. Besides that, there is no business logic that could be copy pasted so you have to figure out how to implement everything yourself.

Is there any projects/tutorials like this for java?
