@peter yeah outside definitely helps! My loft is covered in some weird tin-foily insulation so signal up there was worse than upstairs.
Historically the antenna has been untidily hanging out of a upstairs bedroom window, which was mostly fine - accept for the house blocking half the sky.
I've got some hills to the north and west which limit range, but am only a couple of miles from the south coast, so decent line of sight over France.
@paul For here in Kent I seem to get more range to the north than the south but then the antenna is against the north wall so has hardly anything obstructing it before the North Downs get in the way.
If I get this up on the roof then it should get a nearly unobstructed view to the south, so should get further into France than I do now
