GitHub - billabear/billabear: SaaS Subscription Management and Billing System

I've created a self-hostable subscription management and billing system which aims to compete with the likes of Recurly and Chargebee. The main differences are it's self-hostable (or hosted on request) with complete control over the data and a one-off license fee instead of a monthly base and revenue percentage fee.

It's source-available and can be found at https://github.com/billabear/billabear.

And there is a demo video at https://youtu.be/cbInyGtqLCs

Features:

  • Fully customisable Invoice, Receipt, and Email templates
  • White Label Billing - Handle multiple brands
  • Voucher Management
  • REST API for integration
  • Multiple Email Integrations - SendGrid, MailGun, and Postmark
  • Expired Card Notifications - including the ability to offer incentives to add a card. (This can reduce billing-related churn by up to 30%)
  • Multiple Subscriptions per customer - Add add-ons.
  • Ability to have Custom Plans and Custom pricing
  • Stripe Billing Data Import
  • Stripe Billing Integration
  • Ability to Migrate away from Stripe Billing
  • Invoice payment type for Enterprise customers

For this week only I've got a lifetime deal (that includes updates for life) that is 250 GBP. (5% of a company license and 25% of an indie hacker license with 1-year of updates). You can get it https://buy.stripe.com/4gweY33GnaNP8daeUU. It's kinda of a low risk purchase if you're in SaaS. It's a low price and if in the future you expand to needing something like that then you'll be able to use the more mature version which will have more features at no cost.

Your main website (https://billabear.com) seems dead, it just keeps loading forever.

I like the logo, it's cool and funny. I wonder how you would use this as an icon or favicon, which are very limited in their dimensions, though.

I think your licensing model is very interesting and I quite like it.

The audio quality on the demo video is not bad, but I feel like it could be better. I know getting the audio production right is a very difficult task, but I think there is some room to improve there.

I'm watching the video in the highest HD quality settings on Youtube, but at times, it still gets pixelated and the video quality looks poor. This is perhaps and encoding issue at your end. You might want to get this fixed for your next videos, because pixelated videos give an overall low quality image about you and your product.

Looking at the UI of the product from the video, I think it looks very straightforward and I quite like it. Some users might prefer a more modern look, but this works. One thing that I don't like is how difficult it is to visually tell what is a button and what is not. For example, at 1:51 of the video, I see the Payment Details view and there I can see a few buttons. But the problem is that the buttons use orange background, white font and rounded corners. And the table headers use orange background, white font and rounded corners. This makes it rather difficult to tell what elements on the UI are actually clickable by just quickly visually scanning the UI.

Another thing is that the color scheme of the main UI is very limited. One easy way to improve this would be to add some high quality, colorful icons. For example in the Payment Details view, the Transactions menu has some icons but they are all sad black and white icons. Why not take this easy opportunity to inject some color to the UI with some nice icons here?

The way your forms look could also be improved. For example in 3:13 I can see the Create New Subscription Plan form. Overall, it's okay, but I find it confusing how the checkboxes are under their text elements. After a few checkboxes, this gets confusing as to what checkbox is referring to which element. An easy fix would be to have a checkbox at the same line as its text label. Then they are clear.

I find it odd how on some screens the View button is orange and on some screens it's blue. Why would you change the color for no reason? I would suggest having all your buttons in one color (which should not be orange).

Overall, this seems like a very impressive product! I would probably give this a try myself if I needed this. Well done!
