I've yet to understand how charging an entry fee of €5 would deter anyone, after they've paid thousands just to get there. Maybe €50 would do it, though if I was designing a system to reduce visitor numbers I'd go for a free lottery.

Venice is planning to charge tourists $8 a day to visit. Here's why https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-09-13/venice-is-planning-to-charge-tourists-8-dollar-a-day-to-visit/102844986

gegenovertourisminhamburg,

@timrichards Ich bin für 1.000 Euro Besuchsgebühr für Hamburgs Wohnviertel! 😂

gegenovertourisminhamburg,

@timrichards because hamburg has way too many tourists.

@gegenovertourisminhamburg I never think of German cities as being over-touristed. I'm usually there around May and it's seemed ok.

gegenovertourisminhamburg,

@timrichards Please come to Hamburg or Berlin for example. But maybe as a tourist yourself you won’t notice it like the people do who actually live here.

@timrichards@aus.social avatar

@gegenovertourisminhamburg Fair enough. Can't be as bad as Venice though (though what is?)

gegenovertourisminhamburg,

@timrichards Not yet as bad as . That‘s why people have to act now, before their own cities, in which they pay rents and taxes, got totally taken away from them by the tourism industry.

@timrichards As a comparison, that is less than the entry fee to get in to Monkey Mia. Maybe it is the most they could get away with given the presumably torn feelings of local business people? Of course they could just double it every year until it reduces numbers by the desired amount.

@timrichards
You have to see that many come to Venice (and Europe) in a kinda "Europe-in-10-days" tour, leaving a lot of money to the travel agencies, but not necessarily to the city.
But a lot of trash and leftovers remain there, often only to get that one photo (that everyone has...).
I hope the money will help to keep the city clean from trash, anf if this is too much for someone, then they should not come 😉
Steange, but people often respect thing more if it is not for free!

@timrichards@aus.social avatar

@m_steinwandter According to the article the scheme will only pay for its own administration, which seems pointless.

@timrichards
More money in the administration could result in more resources for doing other things. We will see :)
It is a test, postponed now for long...
We have a similar system for the where you have now to register to be allowed to enter the touristic area. It was too crowded, and a lot of people mean also a lot of 🚮 and 🚻...
And what I've often experienced: a lack of respect (see current example from Florence where tourist climbed statues and broke them...)

@m_steinwandter I'm all for reducing overtourism. Personally I'd have a lottery draw for the busiest times.

@timrichards "It is not a money-making move, he added, saying the fee would only cover the cost of administering the scheme."

So $80 million a year to administer?

timrichards,
@timrichards@aus.social avatar

@Drew It's only over 30 specific days, according to the article, so I suppose the total is much lower.
