Not a lot of people left, but Enforcement still went after them. I crossed a street I shouldn't have and they caught a read. Bots awakened. I drifted, slinked and dodged. I rolled under a gate. Bots did not go. Forbidden, maybe. I sauntered up the path and entered the "No Admittance" facility. I found a terminal, but it had no games. Big factory, pipes everywhere, canisters, furnaces, holding tanks. I type a code, a legend code. Factory wheezes, starts making snow cones.
We all work there. I inherited the post from my father, and him from his. I take care of the temperature of my section. I learned the Prayers and Sequences from my ancestors and I'm good at it.
When I was a kid I asked Grandma what the Factory does. "It makes parts to keep itself running" was her answer.
I'm training my son to take my post, he can read gauges now. He'll be ready in a few years. "We are blessed to have The Factory" I always say to him.
@VisualInspiration The EMP was just icing. The cyberattack killed us: no controls, no billing, and the pumps ate themselves.
That's when I started putting rain barrels on every rooftop. Nearly got in a fistfight with the mayor over eminent domain, but riots are great motivators. Those barrels and this maze of valves mean you get water to drink.
So yeah, I was honored when the courier brought the governor's letter, but really I was just trying not to get lynched. #MicroFiction
