Unusual fossil shows rare evidence of a mammal attacking a dinosaur

  • Canadian and Chinese scientists have discovered a fossil showing a dramatic moment in time when a carnivorous mammal attacked a larger herbivorous dinosaur.
  • The fossil dates back to about 125 million years ago and is located in the Chinese province of Shandong.
  • The mammal in the fossil pair is a badger-like animal called Repenomamus robustus.
  • The coexistence of these two animals is not new, but what is new to science in this amazing fossil is the predatory behavior it exhibits.
  • The fossil was collected in the Chinese province of Liaoning in 2012.
  • Mallon and Wu note that some lone wolverines have been known to prey on larger animals, including caribou and domestic sheep.
