Swedneck, in Scam authors use AI to write "foraging guide books" with bogus information that could poison you
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

You shouldn’t be trusting random online books anyways, you shouldn’t even be trusting random physical books.

Only trust books with a reputation, or that you can verify are authored by someone trustworthy.

Aganim,

And even with a good guide: always be very careful. In my country we are seeing a rise of cases where migrants end up dead or with severe organ damage, because they confuse our indigenous deadly mushrooms with edible mushrooms from their country. And it’s hard to blame them, turns out that some species look so much alike that even experts have trouble telling the difference.

So be careful out there and make sure your guide is suited for the area you’re in.

AlpacaChariot, in first forage! chicken of the woods

That’s cool, what did it taste like? Actually like chicken or something else?

Worth noting that some people have an allergic reaction to this, so it’s worth trying a small amount somewhere safe the first time.

Also if it’s found growing on a poisonous tree like Yew, the fungus becomes poisonous as well.

www.wildfooduk.com/…/chicken-of-the-woods/

LSNLDN,

Thanks for all the info! I did have a nugget size portion myself first in case there was any sudden reaction, then we had it later for dinner. It was growing from a living tree but it wasn’t a Yew.

It tasted like mushroomy chicken! Texture is very close. Also it was incredibly filling and I feel like it has supercharged me for the day haha

AlpacaChariot,

You’re welcome. I’m jealous, I’ve never tried it before! How did you cook it, on its own or in something? I always imagined having it as part of a creamy pasta dish for some reason.

LSNLDN,

Yeah it would probably work very well as you described. We had it battered and fried in a southern BBQ style with mash potatoes and collard greens, just delicious and I can’t overstate how filling it is haha

BrokebackHampton,

Sounds delicious! I think you might be on to something for a vegan fried chicken replacement.
I would do a jackfruit vs chicken mushroom blind test if I had access to the ingredients.

chumbalumber,

Parasols are great fried in breadcrumbs too

FFS it's not AI, it's large language modelling. There is nothing "intelligent" about that.

Mr_Blott,

Found the Linux user

SoNick,

I think you mean GNU/Linux

Nougat,

On what basis?

icesentry,

That ship has sailed unfortunately

CrayonRosary,

I’ve seen this same comment 100 times, and it’s less intelligent than an LLM.

If you talk to actual computer scientists studying these things, they call it intelligence. It doesn’t matter how stupid it is sometimes. All intelligences make mistakes, even confident mistakes. It doesn’t matter that its “just a language model”. Intelligence, when reasonably defined, includes algorithms that produce intelligent output. LLMs absolutely produce intelligent output. What LLMs are not is general artificial intelligence, and they’re not sapient, but they are still intelligent.

You are the second person I've met that understands the difference between AI and AGI. It might not mean much to you, but it means a lot to me. I found my people!

Dashmaybe,

The problem lies in how laymen interpret the phrase “intelligence”. I fully understand and agree with your argument in respect to the technical definition and usage, but laymen will not care enough to understand that, and they’re creating dangerous situations because of it.

This and many more issues heading our way is why we will need our own locally run AI agent to vet and warn us.

Off topic, but wow, a community for foraging

I think this is simply a crime.

If not, then I’m certain they would lose a civil case if someone got hurt because of this.

LibertyLizard, in Ted’s Notes on Pawpaws

Very cool, thanks for sharing. I appreciated the information on cultivation. I’ve tried to germinate some seeds but not had any luck so far. Not sure how well they would do in my hot climate anyway, though I have seen a handful of trees around so it is possible.

tst123,

I’ve started seeing seedlings online for sale. It’s a little more expensive but maybe worth the try if you want something different and low maintenance

Thank you for your service.

WalrusByte,

That’s what I said to the bush as I was picking the berries! 🤣

DavidGarcia,

dog damn it, I was gonna say “thank you for your service berries”

WalrusByte,

It was a serviceable effort!

Looks like my other photo got deleted, so I’ll try posting it here too:

Ooh, that’s exciting! Wish I lived close-enough to check it out

Chocrates, in Mushroom season started early in Norway. Me and my gf picked 10 kilos of mushrooms!

Was about to ask, how do you process them so that they don’t rot before you can eat them. Sounds like freezer and dehydrating them

teydam, in Mushroom season started early in Norway. Me and my gf picked 10 kilos of mushrooms!

That’s a lot of shroomin in the pizzas of your future

Brainsploosh, in How far from the trail before you'll collect something?

Countless critters will have lived, procreated and defecated on anything you find in nature, that’s how nature works.

The things that don’t get edible after a rinse and/or cook are the things we call poisonous :P

As to traffic and road pollution, I actually checked with our national agricultural university how careful you should be, and they basically said: “maybe don’t pick the closest 30 cm, but beyond that a rinse is plenty”.

@Reverendender@lemmy.world avatar

I am jealous and want to learn to do this. Is there a book you would recommend, and can I be successful in Rhode Island?

WordenPond,

@Reverendender Hi Neighbor! Yes, there are groups in Rhode Island that forage for mushrooms. There are a ton of places to go in South County. Chicken of the woods is very common, and is in bloom right now. My friends from Westerly are very hush hush about where the best spots are.

@Holyhandgrenade

Reverendender,
@Reverendender@lemmy.world avatar

Chicken of the woods is delicious! Where might one find these groups? ![](Is it possible to learn this power?)

Holyhandgrenade,
@Holyhandgrenade@lemmy.world avatar

Mushroom varieties are different from place to place, so make sure the book you get applies to the varieties your local area. I have no idea which mushrooms you have in Rhode Island, but it couldn’t hurt to look around.
Unless you pick the wrong mushrooms, then it could hurt a lot.

krewjew, in Mushroom season started early in Norway. Me and my gf picked 10 kilos of mushrooms!

The large orange one appears to have a crying babies face on it that looks remarkably like Donald Trump…

DrOakfield,

Funny, I saw a pirate with a hat and everything, but I definitely can see what you see aswell.

madcaesar,

Well, mushrooms do feed on shit, so it makes sense!
