Toto on Max’s 10 in a row: Our situation was different because we had two guys fighting against each other within the team. I don’t know whether he cares about the record. It’s not something that would be important for me, any of those numbers. It’s for Wikipedia. Nobody reads that anyway

The_one_and_only,

First Hamilton who is discrediting Max by saying he never had a decent teammate, and now this from Toto.

They aren’t handling the losing-part of the sport very well over at Merc…

BobKerman3999,

I mean Hamilton had always had a winning car in all his career, no?

GeneralEmergency,

Until 2009. When he started lying to stewards, vocally complaining about how bad the car was, and posting confidential telemetry data to twitter.

The_one_and_only,

Mostly yes. At McLaren it was borderline winning, certainly not dominant though. And his first year at Merc (before the new regs came into force) was also not a winning car.

smeg,

He always managed to win, but the last few McLarens he drove weren’t really up to scratch

TWeaK,

If anything, winning 10 in a row shows problems with the sport. It’s supposed to be a competition.

frankivo,

To me it looks like the competition has work to do

hagelslager,

What can be done? Besides the RBR/Max combo, the rest of the field seems to be tighter than at any point in the past decade (maybe even two decades).

riotrick,

I don’t think I’ve ever seen the entire field so tight. It’s just Max in the RBR that stands out.

madejackson, (edited )

Yep… Max’s dominance seems to be a side effect of the new regulations for closer racing, IMO. The new regulations favor Max because he is so consistent and fast while still having a bit of a margin, combined with a now very reliable car, and a good portion of luck as well. I still think it’s more interesting to watch than the previous years. Max is, while more consistently in front, still closer to the pack than Hamilton in his dominant years.

I’d also lay a lot of the “problems” of the sport are also due to the attitude of the fans praising the winner in an “all or nothing”-fashion instead of focusing on the battles for 2nd-10th as well. F1 already did try a lot to change this, IMO (DotD, fastest Lap, new Regs, TV-directing)

Sentau,

This. People act as if there is nothing other than the fight for the winner and then completely ignore the brilliant action for all other spots. Yes a season becomes brilliant when there is a compelling fight for the drivers championship but we can have great racing even without a fight for P1

tsz,

If this were cycling, max would be doping. It wouldn’t be a question. It is plainly odd; this I’d just ten in a row it’s ten complete and utter incomparable dominations. They weren’t races for max, just formalities. That is odd. Great car, sure, but it speaks to something else being a little off, whether that’s regulations or the driver or economics I can’t say. Max is an insanely talented driver, and probably one of the best there has ever been, not taking anything away from him in that regard.

Sentau,

Well it is still a competition. Red bull are winning because they made a great car and have a driver who will go down as legendary. Similarly merc had a great car and legendary driver combo. It would only cease to be a competition if Red Bull are given the victory irrespective of where they finish or it comes out that the entire F1 season is scripted in a similar way to WWE

TheBlue22,

Wonder if he said the same if it was a merc driver doing it

Cope and seethe Toto. Cope and seethe

D2Rave,

I get it Toto. 10 straight wins for Max and company, who cares… Its all about the team and the ability to respond to the conditions each week, to have your cars positioned the best they can be, without winning.

Then Toto won’t mind if this gets posted all over the place as a snide reference to him: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ozymandias

bilboswaggings,

Ah yes team boss who doesn’t care about winning, yet slams his hand on the desk more often than merc gets a podium these days

RPM's review of this and Toto's comments are going to send into the 4th dimension lol.

Microw,

Lol he genuinely made that Wikipedia stab in multiple TV interviews

The ocean wants it’s salt back. Can’t we just appreciate his achievements and move on.

nosurprises,

I don’t think that he’s wrong, but that’s not necessary to say. Congratulate the man and move to the next question.

danielfgom,
@danielfgom@lemmy.world avatar

This. Personally who cares how many races a guy wins in a row? Especially when he has the best car by far. All the honour goes to the car actually, not so much the driver.

But congratulate him anyway and move on. It’s basic sportsmanship.

V4ty6BybVXjr,

This is it! Even if you are salty, that does not play well, it’s an expression of insecurity. Just congratulate them and reiterate your commitment to catching up to a stellar team ASAP.

BURN,

The way he says it really shows how much it actually does bother him.

Echoing what I saw on the other site, it’s got to be hard to get beat at the end of your dominant regulation cycle, by a questionable call, then to come out the next year with what you believe to be a race car that would crush the competition and having it be absolute shit must feel terrible. Merc is having a bad few years and it’s got to be demoralizing for the team, some of which probably had only experienced the dominant period.

PizzasDontWearCapes,

Two things Toto’s Mercedes team can’t do:

  1. Build a winning areo car
  2. Act gracefully when recognizing the dominance of their rival

Toto and Lewis are Titans who are making themselves look small with these sour grapes comments

tsz,

Eh, there’s something to criticize about the absolute piles of smugness coming from) bredbull /max. These comments get hyped up, while any humble stuff is never mentioned. It’s a competitive sport, people will inevitably say shit, none of it will ever completely define anyone.

Tagger,

“questionable” …? That’s putting it very mildly.
