Scotland launches campaign "give cycle space", reminding that those riding bike are real persons

The campaign aims to promote the highway code rule that requires drivers to give at leadt 1.5 m space to cyclists when overtaking.

"The ad shows someone cycling on the road from a driver’s viewpoint, together with images of their life and loved ones in the space next to them.

Our message is that we’re all people, travelling on the road and wanting to get home safely. Dangerous and careless driving around people on bikes is risking someone’s life and risking serious legal consequences. "

There’s been a huge uptick in pedestrianisation, bus gates, cycle lanes, Low Emission Zones, and now an ad campaign supported by the Scottish police. The SNP just dropped their agreement with the Greens, and it’s cost their leader his job.

Infrastructure takes time, and it’s moving in the right direction.

Could it be faster? Absolutely.

But this campaign is hardly something to be complaining about.

In rural Scotland (at least in Fife , Perth +Kinross) I noticed a lot of
60mph-40mph - 20mph - 40mph-60
sort of slow down buffer zone type things around villages.

Much better than 60 - 30-60 we normally have in England.
And noticeably quieter too.

I hope they carry on with that.
I think Wales did 20mph in all rural villages.

Fuck England.

We need an extra advert pushing rule 64 - “You MUST NOT cycle on a pavement”. There are just too many damn cyclists whizzing past me on the pavement when I’m walking to and from work.

I get it, they’re in a hurry to get home, but they need to accept that the safety of pedestrians is paramount.

I’m a cyclist in the UK and you’re totally right. Enforce the laws against those uninsured electric motorbikes constantly riding on paths and ignoring every law possible as well.

Scotland is just not bike friendly, our ‘cycle lanes’ are just a thin often mostly worn away white line painted on a road of normal width (Which for americans is already way narrower than your roads) and trying to actually cycle on them is tantamount to attempted suicide.

Not to be too negative but begging for drivers to consider us human is so tiresome.

We already know how to nearly eliminate road death. Unbundling the modes (segregation) and treating cars as guests where that’s not possible. After that treat infractions by drivers seriously. If you can’t drive safely your license should be removed. No more arguing in court that you need to drive to get to work.

It also, I think, centres the ability of drivers to act independently of the visual design of the infrastructure and whilst, that is possible of course, research suggests driving behaviour is more strongly determined by design than conscious choice.

No, you’re right. This doesn’t really work. Infrastructure is all that will change people’s behaviour.
