Infinity is the best alternative to Sync right now.

I’ve never heard of Infinity before, but after being let down by Sync asking so much for removal of ads (20$ or more) I think I found my Lemmy app finally. Sync is an amazing app, but the dev’s greed made me look at it in a very different way, just like with Reddit, where now if I can I want to avoid using it.

The fact that Infinity is open source and free/no ads is also a huge bonus. Why use a paid app when there is an open source alternative with no tracking or privacy concerns. I tried Jerboa, Connect, Liftoff and Thunder, but none look or feel as good as Infinity by the way, even though they work fine.

Thanks a lot to those who work on this app, you won me over, keep up the great work!

Showroom7561,

I was using Infintity for Reddit, so it feels so familiar to me.

But the app or website someone chooses to use is completely personal preference, since they are still accessing the same content.

Hangglide,

Why can’t I see infinity or voyager in the Google app store? There are tons of posts on here talking about how great they are, and I can’t find them.

Proxima_Centauri11,

It’s not on the Play Store yet but on the developer’s GitHub: codeberg.org/Bazsalanszky/…/releases

KSPAtlas,

Neither of them are Google Play apps.

Voyager is a web app, the way it is designed to be used is you go to vger.app, you go to settings->install app and follow the instructions.

Infinity for Lemmy is on Izzydroid, which is an app repository for F-Droid, which is an alternative app store for Android (popular among open source and privacy respecting apps).

  1. Get F-Droid. Go to f-droid.org and press the button to download it. Once the download is complete, click on the notification and it should show you a “Do you want to install this app” prompt. Click install, it may tell you that your phone isn’t allowed to install unknown apps from this source, in which case you click the settings option and flick the switch to allow unknown apps. Depending on your phone, it may also show an “Unsafe app blocked” message (this is because F-Droid is built in a special way which allows it to run on many versions of android, but which triggers this message). In this case, simply click the more option and click on “Install app anyway”. If you did this correctly, you will get an “App installed.” message.
  2. Install Izzy-on-droid repository. Open the F-Droid app, go to settings and click on the “Repositories” option. Click the add button in the top right, and enter the URL “apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid/repo”. Press the add button, and make sure the repository is turned on. Now go back to the Latest screen and pull down in order to refresh repositories.
  3. Install Infinity for Lemmy. Search for it in the search bar, click it in the results (the one with the yellowish-peachish icon) and press install. Follow the same instructions as you did for installing F-Droid in this case.

If you followed all these correctly, Infinity for Lemmy should now be installed on your phone.

Gamey,

AuroraDroid (my favorite F-Droid client) has a one click solution to add a few useful third party repositories including Izzy’s, I use that for years and can’t recommend ut enough!

Voyager is on the play store now play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.vger.vo…

KSPAtlas,

Why does it say it includes “extreme violence” and is marked pegi 18

Madbrad200,
@Madbrad200@lemmy.world avatar

probably just because that content can be found on Lemmy. The app is fine though.

KSPAtlas,

So can adult content, but that isn’t listed

smartiphone7,

In the US it’s M because “users interact”

Robboman93,

I’ve used infinity as my reddit app for a long time and its really exciting to now see it being developed for lemmy! I’ve just tried infinity for lemmy and it’s already so great, best app by far for browsing lemmy imo. Great work developer 👍

SkullHex2, (edited )

in the process of deleting every comment of my lemmy.world account, and permanently joining some instance that does not censor stuff

Mudflap,

After using sync since release I’ve been so confused about everyone raging over the ads… I haven’t paid for it (and never will) and I haven’t seen a single one.

Then I remembered I pasted adguard into my phones DNS and I’m only just more confused. I thought most of Lemmy’s users were a bit more on the technical side. It’s such an incredibly simple workaround I’m starting to believe people are just choosing not to use it and cite “sync’s ads” as a soap box to champion their favorite app.

Which is fine, the more options the better IMO, just an odd thing to spend your time doing.

Madbrad200,
@Madbrad200@lemmy.world avatar

Most people really don’t realise how incredibly easy it is to block ads on mobile.

Mr_Buscemi,
@Mr_Buscemi@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I think ads were only shown in the card view format. Having it on compact showed 0 ads in my experience.

Gamey,

I used Infinity for Reddit and it’s a different developer doing Infinity for Lemmy but still just as awesome of a experience! If you search a good open source Lemmy client you basically have to check it out! Btw IzzyOnDroid is about to add it to his repo so F-Droid will be a opetion to install it very soon! ;)

lolgcat,

I’m in the same boat as you, re: having moved from Sync to Infinity. The fact Infinity’s interface made it possible for me to figure out quite naturally, and within ten seconds, how to go from the front page to finding this instance + community alleviates so many of the headaches from the past two months of mobile web lurking.

Seeing all the different instances by people’s usernames is so cool. It shows off, slyly, a lot of power within the lemmy/fedi platform. Very impressed.

Qvisten,

So greedy, 1349kr for lifetime and that’s like 117dollars… that i can’t support. Sync is good but not that good. Would buy infinity (pro) in a second for 20dollars 😉

PsychedSy,

He hasn’t sorted out the localized pricing and is working through the list in order requested.

nooneescapesthelaw,

Infinity is open source there wont be an infinity pro

SatyrSack,

So was Infinity for Reddit, but there was still an Infinity for Reddit+. As far as I understand, there was no difference in functionality, so it was basically just a way to donate to the dev.

tills13,

A little dramatic. You don’t need sync pro. Sync ad free is $20.

It costs a lot of money to maintain a service like sync. $120 isn’t too bad. He’s working on regional pricing, too.

amenotef,
@amenotef@lemmy.world avatar

And let’s remember this is still an alpha so once it reaches stable this will be MUCH better than it is.

kratoz29,

Like all Lemmy apps to be fair.

SWIM,

Sync just trying to be greedy like reddit, trying to price it as if they would have to pay api costs or some shit

catsarebadpeople,

How dare they ask for money in exchange for work!

Melkor,

How dare they practice open greed in this sensitive environment, ideally customers hold him accountable that’s the only way to fix it.

IgnacioM,
@IgnacioM@lemmy.ml avatar

Bro its $20

Melkor,

Yea I get it I think I went off script a bit xD it’s not about money though just to be clear, but power for the little guy at the expense of the big.

SWIM,

Keep convincing yourself that it’s a good price, lol

Madbrad200,
@Madbrad200@lemmy.world avatar

How much do you think app development (incl the time and skills required) is worth?

starlinguk,
starlinguk avatar

Sync for Reddit was 4 quid. This is greed, pure and simple.

Madbrad200,
@Madbrad200@lemmy.world avatar

Reddit is a much more popular site, though. Prices have to take in account scale. You can charge $4 when you know you’re gonna get 100k+ downloads, is that sustainable on just 10k downloads (and most people won’t buy it)?

I’m not buying it and I block ads anyway, but I’m not gonna shit on the guy for trying to recoup costs. App development doesn’t grow on trees - it takes time, effort, and money. And there’s something to be said about how it’s easily a top 2, if not the best, Lemmy app out right now.

XaeroDegreaz,

What do you use for adblocking in apps?

Madbrad200,
@Madbrad200@lemmy.world avatar

nextdns.io

Simple change in your phones dns settings, no seperate app required.

kratoz29,

Dev is working on regionalized prices.

RootBeerGuy,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

He is also still working on enabling people to make posts and not just comment. He is so behind all kinds of apps in development and is putting out an app with ads or IAP to get rid of them, while the app itself is not even complete. Despite taking longer than many other devs and I keep hearing people say that Sync is his day job so he deserves the money.

Honestly, I don’t see how this fits together. He could have waited with pricing options until all basic features are ready, he could have waited with putting in pricing options once he knows how to adjust them to regions. But he did not. I get it if you are a hardcore fan from Reddit but all this just does not look super convincing to anyone else.

PsychedSy,

I’ve had to explain this too many times. He’s doing what we, his users, asked him to do. We asked him to make Sync for Lemmy. We want him to eat. He’s been doing stupid shit we requested for over a decade.

seliaste,
@seliaste@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It was my favorite app back in the reddit days. I am glad the developper ported it to lemmy, as it is one of, if not the best I’ve seen yet

Sync screenshots looked good but as I am using a degoogled phone no in-app purchases are possible for me.

TheCopiedCovenant, (edited )

Yes!! The Sync dick sucking is crazy. I’ve been using this fork of Infinity to continue using Reddit, and toying around with Infinity For Lemmy.

Infinity is literally just as polished and smooth as Sync. Plus, totally free and open source. No tracking, no ads.

Edit: Hey butthurt Sync soyboys, stop downvoting everything in this thread. Go circlejerk each other on your own sublemmy and pay the dev $100

psychic717,

Exactly…

Thanks for the link, I wasn’t aware of this.

Raymordius,

Lol, I’m all for FOSS but I don’t understand why there are so many Lemmy users shitting on Sync. People should be allowed to pay for software they are comfortable with.

Now that Sync supports Lemmy it will bring more users to the platform, which is what Lemmy needs right now.
