Not surprised the City of Melbourne LGA has 60% of households with zero to one cars; I've always said you could easily live without a car in inner-city Melbourne. Would be interesting to see how many households here have precisely zero cars.

Not Melb. but we lived for years car free on the Gold Coast. Best thing ever, as a bonus, we even rented out the car spaces in our apartment complex to others, this more then covered the cost of our admin fees and part payed the rates .

Used the Tram (light rail) extensively but it had the issue of no legal way of taking your bike or escooter onboard for last mile, sonwed need to bus for that (but you could with a surfboard)

The Gold Coast is incredibly car centric. We had a little escooters to use on the trains to Brisbane (last mile either end) and a bicycle to get around to the beach and gricery shopped occasionally in the kayak, combined with a paddle. Walk to a large shopping center, dentist, chemist, doctors etc. We just didn't go to stuff that needed a car and chose otjer activities instead. (cycke to the beach, kayak fron the back door etc)

Most people left their car parked much of the time becase there was so much traffic BUT I witnessed numerous people drive across the road (through traffic lights) to the McDoanlds drive thru and drive back when it was literally quicker to walk.

@largess @jessta Good to hear the tram is useful there. I suppose carless people could use taxis/Uber too when needed. Would be good to see the tram and/or the Brisbane rail line extend to Gold Coast Airport.

@timrichards @abc_bot How is Melbourne going to fix Sydney's car problem?

@timrichards @abc_bot Dubious and definitional. Greater Sydney 5.4M June 2023, Greater Melbourne 5.21M in 2023.

@Transportist @abc_bot I think that Sydney definition includes Gosford? Which is a reach IMO. Might as well add Geelong to Melbourne.

@timrichards We haven't owned a car in years - moved from Port Melbourne to West Melbourne. We've got memberships to a few carshare companies, but rarely use them. It's mostly walking and tramming.

@jurgen Good to hear. I'm baffled about the number of people who choose to drive in the CBD; it looks like a horrible experience.
