Any Freedconn users? Thoughts on R3? Options/alternatives bang for buck?

Hi guys! I’ve been a kinda long term user of Freedconn camera/bluetooth/intercom combos, and I’ve been more or less happy with them. I’ve had up until now the more basic R1, then upgraded to two R1-Plus for me and my partner. These have been working very reliably for the last few years, but the weather hasn’t been kind in one of them (mine). The charging lid fell off a long time ago, and with rain slowly seeping through I’ve seen some some annoying behaviors that might be linked to it… and it might need be needing a replacement soon.

I see the new R3 is supposed to have better video image, although I’m not sure how good will it perform in the night? Are car plates readable? With the R1 it takes some hard guessing due to the dark/bright contrast blinding the camera from showing the plate properly.

I also noticed the R3 also includes a “music share” function, which is interesting, but I wonder if that interrupts the normal intercom functionality? Or how does that work? Any ideas? Thanks!

Alternatively, is there any other camera/headset/intercom combos out there with similar/better qualities for a similar price?

Thanks!

tiredcapillary,

I’ve thought about using these kinds of camera/common systems but a while ago when I looked into it they seemed to have so-so video footage quality and had so-so battery life. I’d be interested to know what other people think too, currently have a sena and go pro setup.

Looking at their website, I don’t see much about interoperability between brands though, and no specifics on battery life when in use. I’m not sure if you’ll ever get good footage at night though, I haven’t tested that with my gopro so I can’t speak to that.

Well they ain’t anything compared to your setup. Image quality is obviously way worse than a GoPro (you’re not getting anything cinematic out of this, just for safety/crash purposes), and audio quality won’t have the same noise-cancelling functions than a Sena or similar. But then again, their price isn’t even in the ballpark. These are much cheaper do-it-all devices, camera/bluetooth headset/intercom. Some like the R1 (pro model) and R3, both from the WiFi cameras section are supposed to be interoperable with other devices from other manufactures. But i am not sure the R1 plus (my current model) has it. At any rate i don’t ride with groups, only with my partner riding pillion behind, so on that limited scenario, they work rather well. Only minor inconvenience is I can’t hear both my partner and the GPS instructions at the same time, I’d like to have a mix/share option, which the R3 might have…and maybe a bit better image quality.
