I’ve usually had one or two on my list, but at the moment I don’t have any. After buying close to a hundred folders over more than twenty years I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted, I just couldn’t find it:
Spyderco
Reasonably large recurve blade
Comfortable grip that extends out past the index finger
Button or sliding-type lock
Wave opener
Deep-carry clip
Interesting color and accents (not black)
I could get everything except the blade from third-parties, but I’d given up on finding a recurve blade I liked. Then I found a guy on Etsy who will custom-made any shape you request (and in most high-end steels) for various production knives. He made me a deep recurve with a Wave opener in S90V. The blade shape, along with a full-flat grind, makes that the best slicer I own. Here is how the final results looks: https://lemmy.ca/pictrs/image/37169b92-0eb1-44c7-b5e7-a72fb32d47bd.jpegYou can’t see it, but the clip on the other side is a gold-anodized deep carry from Lynch NW.
Seems everyone swears on their grandmother over the penguin but I thought it kinda looked funky so I wasn’t sold on it. Finally grabbed one and I gotta say, it didn’t take me long to change my tune. Super smooth, great feel in the hand, and based on the blade design and geometry I could really see this thing being a solid everyday workhorse.
Praxis is cool too but kinda big for most days for me. Maybe should have bought the mini, but just wanted a bigger one for the collection
Dang, nice! I only have one but it went from a brand I’d not heard of to the primary knife I reach for everyday within moments of its delivery. They are just beautifully made and the operation is perfection.
Thanks, I agree the action, fit and finish on these are amazing. I have tried a lot of brands and I only have 1 or 2 of most brands remaining in my collection but Shirogorov knives seem to stay once I acquire them. I just can't bring myself to sell them.
If you do end up wanting to take it apart I really recommend getting some high quality torx bits. The cheap ones will end up stripping your screws and then you end up with an even bigger headache. I'd pick up a set of wiha bits off amazon or directly from their site. At least that way if you do take the plunge to take it apart you'll be ready to roll with the right tools.
You can wash it with soap and water, opening and closing it repeatedly, then rinse well. If you have a compressor or air canister, blow out it out thoroughly, then put it in a sandwich bag and spray it with wd40 and let it sit in there for a while. Take it out and wipe it off a few times / blow it out, add a few drops of your preferred lube to the pivot and work it in a few times by opening and closing the knife and you should be good to go
Dang. I was thinking about making a post, but now I'm reconsidering cuz yours is quite intimidating. Those are some fancy knives. I'm just a modest budget blader. Maybe I'll work up the courage.
Very nice EDCs. And nice to meet you. Thanks for creating a place for us to talk folders.
Well that is the culmination of decades, I sure as heck didn't start out with those! There is room for everyone, no matter what! I'd love to see what you have and I'm sure other folks will too.
Well, thanks. I have no idea how to work this thing, but I guess I'll figure it out somehow. And if there's a place to discuss knives, it just makes me more determined.
Yeah, I'm still trying to figure out why things I post on my lemmy.one account aren't showing up here and vice versa. I'm sure it just takes time to sync up but regardless, glad there's some knife content here now!
