What experiences / values led you to care about privacy?

Hi all!

I'm a writer writing for an online magazine about the universe of highly privacy-conscious people. Specifically, I'm trying to understand the psychology of privacy — what personal experiences and values drive the community to go against the grain of surveillance capitalism (Google, Apple, FB, etc.) and take (sometimes inconvenient) actions to protect the privacy of themselves and their loved ones? Is obsessing over privacy pathological, or is the rest of society pathological?

Please tell me your stories and opinions on why privacy is important to you!

(PS obviously do not feel any pressure to give any details that are identifying)
