Reddit changed their minds, do a half step back - RIF can access Reddit but doesn't accept login

Seems that someone at Reddit decided to grant read access to RIF, this morning I opened the app just for kicks and it wouldn't load anything. Well I tried again after lunch (Europe CET time) and it could access the front page but I was logged out. Trying to login shows a different logon page and even with valid credentials gives out a 'Bad request' response.

That means they are not just feeling the heat, they are probably burning really bad.

K3zi4,

Nah. Absolutely fuck Reddit. I paid for RiF, I’m happy with my contribution. Used it for 12 years. Sadly removed it from my home screen this morning when I saw it was over.

I absolutely refuse to provide reddit traffic, even if it does now show content. If the reason it’s showing content is really due to reddit backpedalling, then fuck them, because they’re ONLY doing it now that it’s affected them. A little late for that.

I’ll return to reddit only if they reverse this API shit, and if spez gets the boot. Until then, I’m done.

fidodo,

I’m curious why you would go back? I’m totally happy on Lemmy. There are some growing pains but it’ll get better and I think there’s already plenty of content. Lemmy doesn’t need as many users as Reddit, it just needs to hit a critical mass to have enough content to keep you busy and I feel like it’s already pretty much there.

CodeInvasion,

Lemmy today and Lemmy a week ago are night and day! Content has already reached 2014 reddit levels of activity. Besides the different UI, I wouldn’t know I left.

Lemmy on 12 June was extremely sparse. Highest upvoted posts maybe had 50 votes and “active” and “hot” showed posts from up to 7 days prior. Now it’s so much better with the amount of activity.

Larry316,

jokes on them. i hasn’t logged in to reddit since i deleted my account a year ago. literally only use rif for read only mode to watch videos. dont login access to post cos most of reddit are retarded so trying to have any kind of conversation with them is impossible.

Maybe the clue is in the author's name :)

TalkLittle.

Very little now.

I don't think anyone has changed their minds as such though - apart from the 429 error it hasn't stopped working for me at all.

mykeuk,

Just came here to say this. Was getting the error when I woke up this morning, went back on just now and got the log out / web version show, then refreshed and back it was. I wonder what’s going on!

missmayflower,

Eh, I'm removing RiF from my homepage, probably wont delete the app though (too sentimental lol). There's no point in using the app if I'm not able to be logged in and make comments to communities. I'll just leave reddit behind me.

_thebrain_,

the creator of another app, realy for reddit, said the ban goes in to full effect on the 5th, after the weekend and the 4th of july holiday.

Lime_Jam,

Yep, still working for me when logged out. RiF has been removed from the play store (apk still available). I can access all NSFW subreddits as well. Apolloapp has completely shut down from what I'm reading. Spez fails even at being a clown. No idea what's going on but not going to luck a gift horse in the mouth.

seperis,

I redownloaded just to check and I was able to login and can see current content. It did give me an error when I logged in and sent me to the reddit website for a second before I backed out and then all my communities showed.

Between reddit and twitter being insane I have no idea wtf is going on.

ETA: Okay I’m not logged in anymore but all my comms are still available. I do not think reddit is sober anymore and should consider a twelve step program.

warmwhisky,

Interesting. Though without my sub reddits it feels just like classic social media; force fed.

teacs,

For what it’s worth you can still put your favorite subs in the sidebar by starring them and have easy access. Honestly lurking with rif is a much better experience than using the first party app

warmwhisky,

Thanks for the info. I’m not sure if I will try that just yet. It would be nice to hear from the creator of RIF and see if he condones any of this.

tatertime,

The rif creator recommended we come to lemmy.world. its why i am here.

rDrDr,

I can definitely browsee reddit without h rif while logged out.

Lime_Jam,

The argument was that API requests cost them money so we may as well hurt them financially a bit by continuing to browse on RiF. Spez can’t do anything right 😂

rDrDr,

Not a good sign if we literally can't tell if this is a galaxy brain strategy or a technical failure.

psimonk,

Maybe they can still say " oh hey look our traffic/requests are high"? They lost some valuation late last week so they might be looking for any way to indicate that the number of people/ access requests aren’t dropping.

Weerdo,

Read only use is hardly good though, that’s just coating them money. You want engagement from users to drive ads.

FoodSandwich,

too little too late

speedycat2014,

I'm leaning more toward "incompetence" as the explanation for this. What good does it do Reddit to leave RIF intact, but simply disallow logging in?

Reddit's value depends on content creation and interactions driving ad views. Read-only RIF users create no content or interactions with the site. And for many like me who purchased the premium ad-free version, we see no ads.

Admittedly, I'm not sure if the RIF ads in the free version are Reddit's own ads or not, but without the content creation, and the interactions driving more engagement, RIF does little but drag on the site.

midgethemage,

The ads in the free version are rif ads, so that revenue would go to talklittle. That was one of the sour points of the API change; anyone utilizing the API aren’t allowed to run their own ads. So not only was the new API absurdly expensive, but reddit was also blocking 3PA developers from getting any revenue outside of subscriptions
