Photos of Real Life

Specs331, in Just shot my first roll of film! This my favorite photo by far! What do you guys think?

Congrats on your first roll! For me, this picture isn’t bad for what it is, but there’s room for improvement.

Like when I take a step back, nothing about the composition is really drawing my eye. So it kind of just reads as a random assortment of people on the street

For the next roll, I would put the composition and readability in the forefront of my mind. If I have to scratch my head and go “what am I looking at?”. It’s probably not that great off the bat. Henri Cartier Bresson, is probably the best teacher when it comes to readability. Even when there’s many elements he still finds ways to guide your eye.

Dihua St. (迪化街) north of Beimen station is a historic street with tons of old buildings and shops and lanterns that might make for some good pics! Don’t know about the specifics of your camera request, but there’s a whole block of camera shops just south of Beimen station (if you just look up “camera stores” around the Beimen area on any maps app they should all pop up). Hope that helps and enjoy Taipei!

This photo slaps !

timdesuyo,

thanks. i am pretty happy with this one

timdesuyo, in Like an ogre, this photo has layers

The thing that makes me proud of this photo is that it looks completely different if you are a long-term Japan resident.

jabakobob,

Can you explain why?

timdesuyo,

It's very clear from her clothing that is is a very normal day for her, and that she is very used to having to travel in kimono in the rain, but she cares very much to be proper when doing so. I don't know why she was there that day, but I can make some educated guesses based on the clothing she is wearing that would be very different than a person who hasn't spent so long in Japan.

There's a subtle difference in the clothing and the manner of wear and the self consciousness of a person who is dressed up for a special event and a person who dresses up regularly for reasons. I think that depending on your level of experience with these people, this photo can look very different to you.

I got this guy's business card afterwards, but it was many years ago and I have since misplaced it. He seemed like a fun sort of guy.

AngryCortierBeastman, in Just shot my first roll of film! This my favorite photo by far! What do you guys think?

I think you didn't think about your framing, didn't wait for a decisive moment, and left a whole bunch on the table in your post processing. The old saw is that your first 10,000 photos suck, and I don't think that's true, but you probably have to take 10,000 photos before you can have a clear opinion on those earliest photos.

Got it boss!
Here's an edit of the photo I made what do you think?
The reason I liked the photo cause for me it kinda splits the image into three parts that could be standalone photos. First one is the buff guy on the bike that's framed by the streetlamp. Then there's the family goofing around in the center and on right there's some grandpas doing a bit of banter.
I guess that's one of those things that people don't see unless someone explains it to them.

You're right I should work on my framing. I'm way too impatient. I move around way too much!
Thanks for the feedback! :)

I think that you could have had something interesting here. I think before COVID, the advice would have been to get a wide wide lens, and get closer on the left there. Get a higher angle to separate the subject from the boats and the water in the background, and more of a side on angle, so you had a chance of maybe catching a decisive moment.

Now that COVID is a thing, a more telephoto approach might have been more advisable, which might have been better at a lower angle, but the same thing about getting around to the side and waiting for a decisive moment would have still applied.

laurentbourrelly,

Thank you for the feedback.
I do have several angles and hesitated with the higher angle indeed.

Your point about Covid is interesting; I didn't think about it, but it's true that we extended the "safe" zone.

timdesuyo,

It's something that I think a lot about. Before the pandemic there were times when I was shooting with a 180° fisheye, so I was like RIGHT on top of my subjects, but I would often shoot with a 35 or 50. Since the pandemic started, I haven't shot street with anything shorter than 85. I feel like COVID really changed the math on risk assessments, and that, in combination with face detection and the general deanonymization of street photography, really changes the whole genre going forward, in terms of technique and law.

timdesuyo,

6x9 cameras aren't always the most subtle.

This photo is really nice! I like the composition, and to me, it asks a question — is the snowman intentional?

timdesuyo,

It definitely is intentional, but the question is at what stage was it intentional. Like, was this manufactured for some customer-facing use and the company rented it because it was what was available, or because they thought it was awesome, or was it really intended for construction from the get go? I think all of those are viable options.

timdesuyo, in Henri Cartier-Bresson documentary that includes footage of him shooting and being interviewed

One of the interesting bits here is how he wanted to be very clear what was a crop and what was not a crop, because he felt it was important for the viewer to know that.
