These placeholders are no longer necessary to explain or predict outcomes that previously depended on them.
The new method is a very specific type of MOND (modified newtonian dynamics) called AQUAL.
The new dynamic is called 'Milgromian Gravitational Dynamics' after professor Mordechai Milgrom, one of the principles wwho first proposed AQUAL.
