Will the DVP and Gardiner Expressway be tolled? What Ontario’s takeover means - Toronto | Globalnews.ca

Ontario’s new deal with Toronto involves the provincial government taking control of the Gardiner Expressway and Don Valley Parkway, a move estimated to save Toronto $7.8 billion in road maintenance costs. Despite Ontario Premier Doug Ford expressing reluctance, the responsibility transfer means the province will manage and fund repairs, closures, and maintenance decisions for the two roads. The deal also includes a commitment not to toll the expressways, with funds saved redirected to address Toronto’s priorities, such as pothole repairs, TTC improvements, and affordable housing projects. The agreement is set to be solidified through imminent legislation.

Paragone,

ANY time you have the Authority & the Consequences/Responsibility divorced from each-other…

…you inevitably get greater dysfunction/corruption/wreckage.

Governments need to be orthogonal to each-other, departments of 'em, too.

Those roads are in Tarana, they need to be governed & managed within Tarana.

Peppycito,

The Gardiner (*sp) is such a white elephant, the city is lucky to be rid of it.

Those highways served the suburbs but thr city footed the bill

It’s a good thing the city got rid of thek

7rokhym,

Doug specifically said it wouldn’t be, but I struggle with his Jedi mind tricks. Does it mean he will?

johnvan54,

@7rokhym @nimnim Doug is the most car friendly premier we’ve had. He will not put tolls on these roads.
