Alright, going to ask the “dumb” question since my Google searching is fruitless here.

When these unions talk about eliminating tiers, what are they actually fighting for? I always see it explained as newer workers being paid less than older workers which to me just…makes sense? Maybe it’s the jobs I’ve had but even when we’re getting 3% raises (in record inflation so it’s a pay cut, yes yes…) our base salary is going up and the more years you’re with someone, the more that drift between the new and old worker base pay will just naturally be.

Are these tiers something else that’s entirely different? Every time I try to find an answer to this it comes back as what the UAW/Teamsters/etc…are negotiating for but I can’t wrap my head around what the practice is today and what they’re trying to fix/eliminate in the contract.

BarryZuckerkorn,

The two tier system isn’t just a simple seniority system. The newer tier is on a permanently lower trajectory on pay.

In 2023, someone who was originally hired in 2013 is making significantly less than a 2007 hire was making in 2017, for the same job. That 10-year experience is more valuable for one tier than the other.
