I’m pretty into units of measure (which is why I’m fun at parties).

I ran into a couple odd ones today.

Some background: most unit names are lowercase, i.e., not proper nouns, even though many are named after people. So, watt, meter, kelvin (degrees Celsius is the big exception)

Unit symbols can be caps or not: W, m, K, ℃

A weird one I saw today is the gal, a unit of acceleration with symbol Gal to distinguish from gallon

And torr, a unit of pressure, has symbol Torr for no freaking reason.

I hadn’t seen a beer vending machine in a neighborhood for a long time. Today I took a different route on a walk and found two 🫨

It also had a scanner for the drivers license. Last time I lived near one, years and years ago, it was just totally open / verification free.

A machine with labeling on it in Japanese that says it’s a drivers license scanner
