‘The goal is to destroy Gaza’: Why Israel rejects a ceasefire with Hamas (www.aljazeera.com)

Israel appears to have been blindsided by Hamas’s announcement on Monday that it had agreed to an Egyptian-Qatari ceasefire proposal. But the Israeli government quickly made its position clear – the proposal wasn’t something it would agree to, and, to make matters more explicit, its military forces took control of the...

It was blatantly obvious from the moment Israel shut off food, fuel, electricity and water to Gaza, obliterated Gaza City, and drove everyone to the Raffa border that a Final Solution was their only objective. This became EVEN MORE obvious after they deliberately bombed the al-Ahli Arab Hospital. This became EVEN MORE obvious while they continued to systematically exterminate the patients and torture the staff of every other hospital in Gaza.

D-Bus is a common mechanism for inter-process communication used on Linux. It allows applications and services to present a collection of properties and methods, as well as interact with the properties and methods of other process. It is used extensively by modern desktop environments. It is the canonical interface to interact...

There have been several VERY NASTY CVEs since I set up matapacos in 2022.

Remote code execution: github.com/mastodon/…/GHSA-9928-3cp5-93fm A.K.A. “Toot Root”

Hijacking user accounts: github.com/mastodon/…/GHSA-3fjr-858r-92rw

Among others (there was at least one more really bad one)

Observe: a fascist openly admits that an un-moderated environment of absolute free speech actually has the potential to squelch conversation. A rare sight.

As somebody who grew up hacking with C++ (on game engines like Doom and Quake) and has also fucked around a bit with Rust (early Hexbear days), Rust is very cool. There are no redundant header files to write. You don’t need to install Gentoo to have proper dependency management. The type system is lightyears ahead of what the drunken 90s stupor over object-oriented programming produced in C++. You don’t need to add an extensive non-standard library like Boost to make it usable. Basic shit like iterators work a lot better. Errors can be handled elegantly without having exceptions unwind the stack every time an unexpected result occurs. It has its own learning curve, but whenever it incurs pain it is fairly clear why, and what problems you are circumventing.

The downsides are that compilation units are much larger, incremental compilation is slower, and support for obscure platforms is nowhere close in comparison to C/C++.

The Nazis built the death camps as a method of improving the cost-effectiveness of their campaign of extermination. The Israelis are not concerned with cost-effectiveness as their implements of genocide are provided to them free of cost by the USA.

Meanwhile, Alabama has https://apnews.com/article/death-penalty-nitrogen-gas-alabama-kenneth-smith-54848cb06ce32d4b462a77b1bb25e656 began using gas chambers.

ProleWiki has a pretty detailed explainer: en.prolewiki.org/wiki/Patriotic_socialism

In short, it is a strain of opportunistic self-promoting hacks who argue the socialist movement needs to embrace the iconography and national mythology of the United States. They generally are very poorly educated about both history and theory. This doesn’t stop them from mining for quotes to torture though. Haz, Caleb Maupin, and Jackson Hinkel are examples.

Their ideology changes like the weather, and they alternate between calling themselves “Patriotic Socialists,” “MAGA Communists,” and other nakedly ridiculous things.

If you are willing to do one last round, I’d tell them ahead of time you plan to quit and see if you can get the DM to prepare some chain of events which allows your character to do some heroic self-sacrifice or embark on a voyage to a far-off land in your last session. Otherwise, people have real lives and they should understand if you are unable to keep going.

Americans: Are you going to vote third party or refuse to vote at all?

I’ve been debating to myself whether or not voting for a third party candidate (Either PSL’s de la Cruz or Green’s West, regardless of my criticisms for both) would be the most “effective” use of my time in election season this year. The argument for “not” is that maybe voting at all is bad because it legitimizes...

Voted PSL in 2020. Will probably do so again, but might consider someone like Dr. Cornel West if they have significant momentum and aren’t cringeposting the whole election. Downballot it’s all write-ins for dead revolutionaries. I sure as hell am not casting a vote for Gottheimer.

Beyond shit like keeping Moms for Liberty out of the school board, this shit is pointless. Pretty much all I’m doing is punching one in for the ghost of Ho Chi Mihn out of spite.

Bcachefs

isaac-pog

It is getting close to time for me to retire my current computer. The CPU and chipset is >10 years old at this point, I am at the RAM limit, and it is the best CPU available for the chipset and socket of my motherboard. On my current system, I use Btrfs on top of a cached LVM logical volume which uses 1TB of NVMe SSD storage to provide writethrough caching for a 6TB hard disk drive. It is a rather convoluted setup, but it is a nice compromise between having limited fast storage and tons of slow storage, and saves me from juggling files back and forth between different filesystems for performance reasons. I might just opt for bcachefs instead when I put the new machine together.

From a materialist perspective, why did the the global north, the western global north in particular, become so powerful it could loot the rest of the world with borderline impunity?

I’ve recently read"The Verge: Reformation, Renaissance, and Forty Years that Shook the World" and want to hear what all of you think the answer is, because I feel like the book was missing something in its thesis and I am not very sure what that is.

World Systems Theorists have some interesting takes on this. In particular, Giovanni Arrighi’s The Long Twentieth Centrury lays out an interesting theory about how the nexus of hegemonic power shifts geographically and temporally through the rise of capitalism to an epochal “signal crisis” and through its financial sublimation leading to a “terminal crisis”. It takes an absurdly long durée view, tracing the development of capitalism from the Italian city states of Florance, Venice, and Genoa, through the Dutch, England, and finally to the US, examining this cycle of accumulation and crisis in each case as the mechanism which drives these tectonic shifts in hegemony.

World Systems Theorists aren’t strictly Marxist, but they aren’t allergic either and do cite a lot of Marxist sources.

Terrance Ray and Sean K.B. gave a pretty good summary of the book in a dusty old podcast episode: soundcloud.com/…/year-zero-the-thousand-year-star…

If y’all are going to dogpile this woman, be smart about it. Read the rules over at historians.social, and let her violate them (they mention both antisemitism and islamophobia). Make calm, historically sound rebuttals and let her expose herself as the one with an unreasonable perspective. Also try not to have a thread where a dozen @matapacos.dog accounts are replying to her while sending reports to their admin.
