I had a letter posted about works that were nowhere near me, so disregarded it. Then I got a hastily hand addressed notice in my letterbox telling me about work starting the next day, so I think they stuffed up the address.

I haven’t always been notified of work in the street where they are closing the roads, but they generally haven’t completely blocked access, I’ve still been able to drive in and out with supervision (to make sure I don’t run over the workers!). I did have to park a few houses away temporarily once when they did block access for a bit, but the workers were very friendly and helped me carry my groceries home 😁

I have a ton of crows in my back yard having some sort of cawing competition. Is this a sign of something? Should I be worried? I’ve also had a black cat cross my path…

RustyRaven,
@RustyRaven@aussie.zone avatar

The crows are definitely a rare event where I am, although the black cat is a regular occurrence. Usually she is trying to trip me up.

There have also been a lot of cockies around lately, probably related to the liquidambar seeds everywhere. Maybe it’s some sort of bird war?

I doubt I could concentrate on work having just won 150 million. I think I’d need at least a week off to have a minor nervous breakdown while I sorted myself out.

Afterwards I definitely would not want a job. Which is different from not wanting to work or do anything productive. If I won a massive amount like that I would look at starting a charity, probably focused on providing housing and support to people in need. Working out how to do that would probably be a full time job, just figuring out how to actually set up and structure something like that, what the goals etc. would actually be, finding the people needed to make it a success.

She was being a bit suspicious in the vicinity of both my stepladder and a cracked mirror in my sewing room the other day, does that count?

RustyRaven,
@RustyRaven@aussie.zone avatar

I honestly doubt 150 million would be enough for that.

What I would probably do in that regard is look at where the missing links are in allowing a more community based supply chain. Most likely something like developing community hubs that can serve as a distribution link between suppliers and consumers. Farmers and bigger suppliers are not generally set up to provide retail quantities, but you can often set up “group buying” schemes to buy in the bigger quantities and divide them up. But they tend to be limited by the lack of places to store and distribute those purchases. If you could set up points that could do that you could have people pick up directly or organise deliveries using uber or other locally available delivery options. Because everything is pre-ordered you would not be trying to handle a retail style shop but could provide a lot of the benefits. If you could provide the initial funds for communities to set up something like that and they could collect a small amount to provide ongoing running costs it would be self sustainable.

This already happens on a limited basis, through places like CERES and community centres. It even happens informally within groups - we have people at work that regularly take shares in a cow and have had things like bulk mango or pumpkin purchases split up there!

Miss Meow managed to knock her toy completely upside down whilst flying past doing zoomies. Apparently being upside down makes it very interesting and mysterious again.

Beer. It covers all three options really so is the only logical choice.

Until covid I’ve never had any reactions beyond a sore arm and a mild headache. The Covid vax was so awful I have decided I can’t put myself through that again.

This reminds me of a time I got lost - I followed the direction on a road sign to go from a tourist destination I had visited and it pointed me into a plantation where I got lost. Both paper and gps maps were inaccurate and a lot of road were not passable. I pulled over to check the map over and over but the roads didn’t match reality and I kept going in circles and it took me hours to get back out. Not quite as bad as trying to navigate the Epworth Hospital carpark but a close second.

Something to soothe the trauma of having to be at work when I don’t want to be at work.

Fabulous, that took the edge off. I’ll have another the same thanks.

The big problem is that they are taking the same sort of approach that Microsoft did with it’s stupid paperclip that everyone hated. People want useful tools, not a system which actually blocks you from doing what you want and instead constantly tries to override what you want to do and know.

Gotta love people on social media who are told by multiple people that they are basically wrong in what they are saying and just double down and start insulting everyone. Not a great character trait.

It’s likely to be circulation issues more than actual cold, in which case extra clothing does not help as much. More activity would be helpful as that stimulates circulation, but an electric heated blanket might be a good option for them.

I like the grocery list app I use. You can group items so that things close together in the shop are together on the list. And when you cross off an item it moves it out of the list so you can easily see if you have everything.

Apparently there will be both pro Palestine and pro Israel rallies in the CBD today. This has the potential to end badly.

I had the order of operations with no problems, but somehow managed to calculate 18-12 = 4 which really messed me up.

I am good at maths in theory, but tend to muddle up calculations in my head. I really need to be able to pin the numbers down on paper, in my head it’s like they wriggle around on me.

All of my plans/goals have been completely changed around by my father’s illness, so I probably less achieved than I would have otherwise.

I have managed to max out my concessional super contributions this financial year and have gotten my clutter problem under control to the extent that moving house now seems like a real possibility. I was doing well with my garden & growing lots of vegies over summer, but the focus on that has now changed to keeping it tidy for future sale so my enthusiasm levels for that have dissipated a lot.

My goal for the end of year is mostly just to move house, which will involves selling two houses and consolidating households with myself and my mother, so is a big enough thing to focus on without adding anything else.

I learned BOMDAS

brackets, of, multiplication, division, addition, subtraction

The next year I learned BODMAS instead, which was initially confusing but introduced the idea that the exact order can be a bit variable, as long as you do the multiplication/division bits first.

I did my vacuuming yesterday. Then just to up the excitement level I steam cleaned the lounge room. Miss Meow was very unimpressed, but bravely returned for cuddles not long after the scary noisy monster was put away.

RustyRaven,
@RustyRaven@aussie.zone avatar

Mr Woof decided it was too noisy when I got near the bed and left the bedroom until I was finished, then returned as soon as the vacuum was off. It was a much more dignified exit than Miss Meow’s ungainly bolt away from the lounge room.

They are all basically the same thing. Brackets (aka parenthesis) are done first - that’s basically the entire point of brackets. Then you do all the multiplication stuff, which includes division (which is just multiplication in reverse), fractions (which are another way of writing division) and exponentials (which are a shorthand for multiplication of a number by itself). Then you do all the addition/subtraction stuff. Within those three groups it doesn’t really matter which ones you do first.

It helps to think of it in terms of something concrete - biscuits are good. Multiplication type maths is dealing with packets, addition is like individual biscuits. So if you have 3 packets containing 12 tim tams, plus 5 tim tams, to work out how many you need to work out how many in packets first, then add the individual biscuits - so 3 x 12 + 5, equals 36+5. When you look at it that way it becomes fairly clear that adding your pack of 12 to 5 individual biscuits and then mulitplying that by the 3 packs just doesn’t make sense.

RustyRaven,
@RustyRaven@aussie.zone avatar

But if you use biscuits once you get to the last bit and do the subtraction it all becomes worthwhile. If I have three packets of 12 tim tams and eat four tim tams what do I have? I have four tim tams in my tummy. Best maths ever.
