I am hesitant to say that I have good news or that I have fixed anything... I honestly don't know if there is anyone left still using this site after all the problems we've had....
I'll keep an eye out and comment back if I notice anymore 500 errors. They were absolutely rampant over the last few days, but things seem all right currently.
It's funny you mention "if anyone is still using this server" because of the technical issues. I would hope anyone coming to Kbin in general has their anus prepared for technical issues given that it's an early in-development site, as you say.
This brings up a good point about the Fediverse, and how there'll be different perspectives on it. I'm sure some have jumped ship because other instances are operating more smoothly, but from all your hard work, correspondance, and word of mouth from other Fediverse users I feel like I can trust your integrity and willingness to get the instance to a good place.
I'm willing to wade through technical issues a good deal because I feel that unless you throw in the towel, you're gonna do what needs to be done, and that even if you did throw in the towel you'd keep us posted and that your reasons would be genuine. It's like the difference between working at a large, stable company with faceless, questionably motivated masters, and working at a small, independent company whose future is not guaranteed, but you can understand the scope of what's going on, and are able to openly communicate and understand your employers all the way up the chain.
I'm extrapolating all of this purely from not very much information, and I could be wrong, but my gut feeling says that I can trust your captaining of the ship, hopefully others feel the same.
I think it's great that so many people want to build and grow Lemmy, but why are we doing it by copying over Reddit content? It didn't seem as bad when it was funny pics or memes or whatever, but now I'm seeing discussion threads, which doesn't make sense to me....
I plan on making two videos, one where I explain how Lemmy works and then how to post in a community. I'm going to do my own research but is there any points you want to give to a new user?
As the title says, lemm.ee is defederating instances that are allowing thousands of spam bots to be created on them. Will we be taking similar action? What is the game plan here?
Jerry seems like he's still just trying to put out fires and get fedia running smoothly, it appears like we're almost there, and then I can only assume he'll be able to talk big picture at that point.
It turns out the way I set up file sharing between the front end web server and the app server created immense slowdowns on fedia. I consolidated some things (web server on app server now), which isn't a long term solution, but will work in the very short term....
Its doing that on and off for me. I think it's got to be linked to the magazines that throw 500 errors. For instance, if you try to look at your subs and that first page contains a post that would've federated from one of the magazines throwing a 500 error, it just throws a 500 for that whole sub page. Just my assumption.
This is the main point, I think. There should probably be a list on each instance of what instances are blocked and why. As it is now you have to realize that things aren't federating correctly yourself, then you're left with a list of questions... Is this a bug? Is this an accident and someone needs to add something or flip a switch? Is this on purpose, if so, when did that happen/change and why and will it ever be reversed?
This lack of easily accessed information on what will federate or not, and to who just creates confusion, frustration, and allows for rampant speculation and possible misinformation, all things you really want to not have in general.
What I've been doing is copying the post's link to Fedia's search bar. Sometimes it works, sometimes it shows up empty. This one deosn't seem to work. The comments are also usually empty....
Hopefully this isn't redundant info, but you can browse other instance magazines through your native instance, for example fedia.io/m/gaming@beehaw.org should allow you to see beehaw's gaming community content through Fedia, allowing you to use your Fedia account.
However, seems like content is not showing up here very well due to the servers being temporarily maxed out, according to Jerry's post anyway
Seems like you can look at the link to the post that should have an "@instancenamehere.com". So far that's how I've been checking post origination, but it'd be nice to have that built into the UI.

Why are we copying over so much Reddit content?

What action are we taking to protect against spam?

Easier way to comment on a post from another instance? (fedia.io)
