@wordshaper I'm curious what your reasons are, if there's any besides cost. Light rail is cheaper to make in the us, but adding a heavy rail line moves more people, is faster, is safer, and requires less operators. I feel the us loves light rail just because they think it saves them money.

I also agree, mass is dragging their feet so hard on the commuter lines. If they electrified it and added some more infill stops it would relieve other lines and improve connectivity in the city so much.

@wordshaper yeah France is pretty good with their trams. I think the idea of the modern European tramway is what your describing where they take car heavy boulevards, and make it pedestrian friendly and run trams down it instead. This is awesome and removes people and cars from the same place and prioritizes transit. But I feel this is more powerful as replacing a bus, and replacing local travel, than trying to expand the transit network.

It's true that these are awesome and very popular, but I feel that they work best in that case, but not in every case. Heavy rail metros move people medium distances, a lot of major cities would be very difficult to traverse if not for their metros.

I feel the US sees all of the tram expansion in europe and misconstrues it into a one size fits all answer of LRT, but that just gives us one really slow way to get from one side of town to the other. We forget that a lot of European cities have metro as well, where us cities dont. Seattles link light rail is kinda weird to see, where you have light rail acting as a metro. It works, but it's weird and the Siemens rolling stock they use can only go 45mph, while heavy rail can easily go atleast 60 mph max usually.

I personally think that the stops I drew were pretty far spaced apart, except maybe in west end / back bay area that could support that density of stops. I think in most cities, especially if they are big enough, a good combination works well instead of a one size fits all solution.
