I’m an IT lawyer, but I mostly work just to pay the bills for two horses - a wily old thoroughbred, and an enormous goofy Clydesdale.

What’s an appropriate penalty for someone who messages me immediately after sending me an email, to tell me that they’ve sent me an email?

Or sends me a contract to review, then immediately sends a meeting request to discuss it?

Maaaate I can’t usefully discuss something if I haven’t had a chance to even read it yet.

@trib @kcarruthers I always thought with all the early panic about Covid originating with wet markets in China, that Australia was super lucky that our very own homegrown Hendra virus didn’t turn into a pandemic.

Does anyone use a thermomix regularly?

I’m always looking for ways to make cooking simpler now that I’m only cooking for 3. But the thermomix recipes are like - put A in, chop 6 seconds, clean bowl. Put B in, cook 2 minutes, then add D and E and cook 3 minutes. Then set aside, clean bowl. Etc.

What’s the saving in time if you still have to stand over the device actively doing multi step processes?

What does it do that I can’t do faster with a wok and chopping board?

@jpm excellent. So, a two thousand dollar rice cooker? Good to know. ☺️

Anyway the shenanigans of the 2023 Hugo Awards nominations are the least of their issues right now (those remain a problem) Turns out a bunch of nerds (many are retired computer folks, of course) who think that they know One Weird Trick about law, well, no, they do not. And they probably need to accept the advice to log the fuck off and seek legal advice, rather than continuing to try and post through it

idealaw,
@idealaw@mastodon.au avatar

@swearyanthony as a lawyer who works exclusively in IT, I wish I had a dollar for every time someone’s tried to explain their One Weird Trick, or refer me to the Killer Contract - The Only Contract You’ll Ever Need that they found on the internet.

You’d think that the US would’ve learned their lesson about going to war with insurgents without an exit strategy.

@kcarruthers you’d think US would have learned their lesson about electing a lying grifter as president.

Which would you rather have?

What’s with giant IT companies having order forms that say: applicable terms are at [URL] except that leads to a page listing hundreds of documents - every single EULA and policy for every product/service they offer, all with confusingly similar names and zero clues as to which ones actually apply?

The actual terms and conditions are horrible enough without having to find the needle in the haystack first.

Meanwhile there’s some internal stakeholder wondering why it’s taking me so long to review a simple one page order form.

idealaw,
@idealaw@mastodon.au avatar

@osma surely they’ll struggle to enforce terms if they can’t demonstrate that the terms were ever provided to the customer in some reasonable form?

Their current practice amounts to plonking down an archive box of loose pages and saying - the terms for the product you’ve purchased are in this pile - just dig out the applicable pages.

@billbennett I am staunchly opposed to working 7 days a week. I’ve tried it and it wasn’t sustainable for me.

Luckily I have an employer with the same ethos. 😊

I recently took up the ukulele and honestly it’s the best thing ever!

You can’t take yourself too seriously when you’re strumming a uke.

Also much easier for people with short stubby fingers than holding down bar chords on a guitar.

@sciencebase someone gave me one - it’s a small step above a kid’s toy - but when I saw an ad for a local class I decided to join.

I do watch how-to vids but it’s hard to learn 100% in isolation.

    As much as I would like a breakdown between "people who voted no because they're racist idiots" and "people who voted no because they were misled by the people claiming a progressive cause for voting no", there's no such nuance in a straight yes/no vote for a referendum. And just like the republican referendum, any nuance that may have theoretically existed will never be acknowledged in future political discussions about today's result.
    Shame on us Australia.

    @liampomfret as with the vote on same sex marriage I’m sad that the rights of a minority group was made a political piñata.

    idealaw,
    @idealaw@mastodon.au avatar

    @liampomfret it was inevitable that Dutton would turn it into another battle in the culture wars.

    idealaw,
    @idealaw@mastodon.au avatar

    @liampomfret I understand the people who voted no because they thought the Voice was inadequate and we could do better.

    I do not understand the people who think that allowing others to speak causes division, even if that speech holds no actual power.

    My beloved bose QC35 headphones have finally given up the ghost.

    Any recommendations for a replacement?

    idealaw,
    @idealaw@mastodon.au avatar

    @cydonian it strikes me that these days I WFH on my own and probably don’t really need noise cancelling (except when the cats are bickering). I rarely leave the house with headphones.

    Hmm.

    idealaw,
    @idealaw@mastodon.au avatar

    @cydonian ah no I use them mostly while working - listening to music helps me focus on drafting, oddly. Plus online meetings. I wfh so never use public transport (rarely leave the house tbh)

    Random thought: given the way that people from USA pronounce the word ‘mirror’ - do they only ever see a ‘mere reflection’?

    idealaw,
    @idealaw@mastodon.au avatar

    @grrrr_shark huh, is that right? There are parts of USA where ‘mirror’ has two syllables? There you go.
