In my opinion, the overuse of abbreviations reflects many meanings:

  • Simplifying communication.
  • Complicating communication. (hiding context by using uncommon abbreviations.)
  • Intentional ambiguity (Security).
  • Job security (a walled garden where you and your team look intelligent and efficient).

Indeed, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, and one of the basics of proper communication is the consideration of the listener; if I feel someone is overusing abbreviations, I treat it as obfuscation and gaslighting(ex. using DM for DreamMachine instead of Direct Message, "please send me the DM ASAP").
