How big is your World Wide Web?

Quite a few years ago, one of us decided to check how many unique pages were in her browser history. To her surprise, she found that she was visiting a mere 10,000 pages a year. That is, even though the #Web as a whole may host billions of pages, her Web was extremely small. If you are an avid browser, your history may hold quite a few more documents, but the fact remains: individually, we only use a tiny proportion of the information on the Web.

A French instance is born... (slowly!)

Ce weekend, grâce à un travail merveilleux de volontaires, nous avons commencé à mettre en ligne une instance de PeARS en français, dédiée à la réparation des objets du quotidien. Elle est déjà partiellement traduite, et voilà une première capture d'écran:

Notre moteur de recherche décentralisé (source ouverte) a besoin d’un petit peu d’aide. On voudrait bientôt commencer à tester des instances dans des langues différentes, mais il nous manque des traductions anglais-français. Est-ce qu’il y a des gens sympas qui auraient le temps et l'envie de nous filer un coup de main? Laissez-nous un DM si vous êtes intéressé(e). One natural question one may have about an alternative #search engine is: how well does it work? This is a complex question with a complex answer, which depends on a) the amount of data that we are searching through; b) the computing resources at our disposal; c) various design choices; d) the nature of the data; e) in the case of a 'curated' search engine like PeARS, user behaviour.

#Introduction

We are PeARS, a friendly project dedicated to the development of a fully open source and decentralised #Web #search #engine.

How does it work? Every instance of PeARS can be considered a mini search engine for a single topic of interest, which is populated and curated by people like you. One beautiful day, when enough instances are alive, they will come together to provide a generalised Web search solution. Owned by you.
