“period typical homophobia” versus just “homophobia” or “background homophobia”?

@lunalein It covers such a swath of potential meanings that it really does amount to tagging with just “homophobia is in this” with no clarification on how much or on what sense. I’ve used the tag twice for two very different fics/historical eras and I’m mulling what the better way to encapsulate that would be.

@lunalein there are times where “there’s a different kind of homophobia in this than there is in the modern era” would be useful as a flag but that’s probably better suited for the author’s notes/content notes — I’m in a ton of historical fandoms in eras where gay sex is fully criminalized so I need a little more to go on to tell if it’s “characters make casually contemptuous remarks about Mary-Annes” or full blast public humiliation and punishment
