Very amused by seeing "gamedevs are sad about unity because they confused learning tools with learning skills", something about it seems familiar - I wonder if all the people who confused learning how a computer works with "kubernetes is the answer" could learn anything from this

Love spending a month on making DevEx the best it's ever been at my employer's, only for someone to publicly shit on my team as a bottleneck. This totally didn't just make us all feel bad for doing so much work on making things quite literally Just Work for developers while delivering everything they asked for within deadlines they set.

theyfemme,

I am tired of trying our hardest and then having someone go "fucking sysadmins, they're all lazy and incompetent" every time we don't meet an even more ridiculous expectation. Especially when people get ruder about it the harder we work on making their work easier to perform.

Tonight I was: Dutch! An unexpected twist on the usual assumptions, but nonetheless hilarious 😂

I can't believe that's where "my father makes wine" places me. Very wrong, but so very amusing.

theyfemme,

Honestly the guessing game is always hilarious, because my accent and mannerisms place me nowhere near the right places, as it turns out that every preconception people have is so incredibly wrong. When people work up the confidence to have a guess it's hard to keep a straight face.

I may have given up what some people call "heritage", but I have traded it for the silliest game (unless USians get involved, those people break out calipers mid conversation if you don't tell them)

Where exactly did the idea that being passionate about a cause delegitimises the speaker? This is never applied to religious people passionately arguing for the murder of homosexuals. Never applied for conservatives passionately arguing about the evils of existing as a member of a minority group. Passion is only bad when used as a motivator of being good, but when it's used to organise immoral and unethical violence, it's suddenly just a viable political position.

theyfemme,

Feels like every single position and view that's been normalised as part of "modern" society is all about ensuring power stays in one place, and all arguments counter to it are declared inherently a fallacy by nature of not being unbiased or whatever other shit is just very dull and pointless. The fact that people do unquestioningly fall for it is both sad and terrifying.

I continue to believe that the only smart device that has had a truly noticeable impact on my day to day quality of life is a robot vacuum-mop, and was worth every ¢ and I do not want to make do without one ever again.

Assuming I want to get an ebook reader again, and this time I want to avoid Amazon and DRM at all costs - are there literally any options at all?

I really liked my first gen paperwhite as well as oasis years ago, but I just resent giving money to a company so against owning anything. I don't miss traveling with a book or three, so I want an some sort of convenient device again, without actively funding the worst practices if possible.

Hypothetically, if your employer decided to massively degrade CICD experience to save ~200$ and also forced your team to become the face of that effort, how fast would you be running?

theyfemme, to random

Every time I get a front seat to a company culture crash it's always weird to watch. What is happening is so obvious to me, but I can never convince anyone to listen, and then one Friday afternoon on a team call suddenly everyone reaches their breaking point at the same time.

How hard is it to shut up about "listening" and "caring" and actually care about and listen to what your employees have to say?

Really frustrated to have had to leave yet another space because naïve moderation meant siding with channers trying to goad people into reacting poorly were given priority, despite the issue arising from someone basically describing their experiences with self harm as positive in an effort to promote that. How much of a credible idiot can you be while moderating? "It's just someone's personal experience" doesn't work here.

theyfemme,

I'm tired of regaining some comfort with interacting with strangers and then immediately having any trust placed betrayed due to their willful ignorance and incompetence.

New Futurama predictably feels dated and painful from the off (and being self referential about it doesn't help), but my main takeaway is that Billy West should consider retirement, or at least having some of his characters retire.

Always happier around pride, as much as it disappoints me how so many queers crave assimilationism to the point of joining our oppressors. We will never truly be free under capitalism. We will always be given half measures while described as too costly to be treated equally. If you cared about your trans siblings, you wouldn't vote right wing. If you are trans and do so, there's some lessons you should learn from history. Selling out saves no one - they will still hate you.

I am increasingly finding myself wondering if there is a single pre-WW2 Germam industrialist who maintained wealth through the war that wasn't the sort of nazi that makes you question if even 0.01% of people who should have been executed for crimes against humanity were.

I hate the phrase civic duty because it absolves politicians of their responsibilities, so I'm calling everyone's participation in a moral duty. It's a sorry state of affairs that a party with a marginal plurality gets to make nonsensical decisions all to appeal their culture war hungry demographic

theyfemme,

What if we could work on making the world better instead of trying to stop a few assholes from making everything worse? How is Germany in general and Berlin in particular so behind that when everyone else is building bikelanes, pedestrianizing whole city areas, and restricting traffic, we are instead looking at finishing an ill thought highway plan that was already a bad idea in the 80s and 90s.

It's like the CDU and SPD actively revel in misery, their plans are objectively negative to all.

"You don't need Terraform to manage this if we make it legacy and promise fewer changes going forward, right?" 😭

Excited to have the tech stack demoted into early 2000s with a stack of scripts that round-robin SSH for changes for budgetary reasons.

theyfemme, to random

Nothing like another business direction pivot, one that sounds a lot like my position has a layoff date set - something to do with all the use of words like legacy and similar. Sure hope that the timeline works out, cause then maybe there's enough time for hiring to open up again...

I feel like the plot of the episode tries to beat into the viewer the simple idea that persecution and oppression on the basis of identity is bad, and that denying people help is bad. I'm not gonna hold my breath in this succeeding

theyfemme, to random

Asking for myself, since I've never been referred - if someone refers you for a position, is it ok to name drop them a bunch during any of the interviews? I've had this happen recently and it still feels wrong, just repeatedly bringing up someone in unrelated questions.

Headline: "Finland elects a centre-right PM"

Reality: Finland now has several nationalists, fascists, and neonazis in key positions of power

The foundation of conservatism never changes.

So I already don't have a charitable view of pfand seeing as it encourages littering under the guise of "helping" poor people, but now I've learned of Pfandgeben and I'm actually just disgusted with this country. Presenting this as a good thing and a method of donating is just fucking vile?

How the fuck can anyone involved feel good about themselves? "No, you don't get it, I let the poor scavenge my trash electronics for rare metals! I provide opportunities!"

theyfemme,

The solution to poverty and homelessness isn't "have them race for empty beer bottles so that they can afford a meal or twk" that's fucking dystopian and not aspirational

Creating a "charitable" project so you can request someone to collect your trash is a whole other level of awful. You'd have to be completely capitalism brained pull yourself up by your bootstraps type idiot to see it as anything but exploitative

theyfemme,

@thisismissem This isn't even an arguable "well food banks encourage withdrawal of welfare systems but at least give people in need food," and Pfandgeben builds on that horrible system by asking people to collect what often amounts to heavy bags (again, beer bottles) for what might be 2-3€ if it was a weekend of drinking.

It's all fucking vile. It's a "7 year old sells lemonade to fund her cancer treatment" type story, Germany edition
