I was not talking about some random guy in his basement.

Misinformation is misinformation, whether it is intentional or not. And it's not farfetched that soon someone will launch a propaganda bot with biased training data that intentionally spreads fake news.

tinselpar, to technology in AI machines aren’t ‘hallucinating’. But their makers are | Artificial intelligence (AI) | The Guardian

AI bots don't 'hallucinate' they just make shit up as they go along mixed with some stuff that they found in google, and tell it in a confident manner so that it looks like they know what they are talking about.

Techbro CEO's are just creeps. They don't believe their own bullshit, and know full well that their crap is not for the benefit of humanity, because otherwise they wouldn't all be doomsday preppers. It all a perverse result of American worship of self-made billionaires.

tinselpar, to general in Is there a video that will tell me how to set up our own server as if I were 5 years old?

Have you ever installed Linux and played around with it? If not, that is where you should start. For learning I would choose something like Archlinux, which will require you to get your hands dirty (as a matter of speaking) and look up things so that you learn step by step. It has to most extensive wiki of any distribution. Search youtube for "arch linux install" for some videos that will give you an idea of what is involved.

Only once you find your way comfortably on Linux, can you think running your own Lemmy.

tinselpar, (edited ) to technology in Are there any active IT/Sysadmin instances or communities that are out there?

Maybe also !Selfhosted. There are selfhosted communities on other servers too.

tinselpar, to technology in How to Kill a Decentralised Network (such as the Fediverse)

It baffles me that so many don't see it for what it is.

Meta contacts their competitor, and says that they want to build a competing product, and want us as competitor to help them with that. How can you possibly fall for that. Meta can already use activitypub for whatever they are building without any need to contact anyone from the Fediverse. The only possible reason they contact instance admins is because Meta wants to dictate the terms on how to Fediverse operates.

tinselpar, to technology in FediPact is an Organized Effort to Block Meta's ActivityPub Platform

Activitypub would be more like NNTP. And Usenet is not in the best shape since Google took over Dejanews and let it moulder and rot.

If we are not federated with them, we are not obliged to follow their changes to the specification.

Billionaires are prepping Doomsday bunkers

Reddit CEO and co-founder Steve Huffman, 33, is one of many wealthy names who have begun to invest in private bunkers.

"I own a couple of motorcycles. I have a bunch of guns and ammo. Food. I figure that, with that, I can hole up in my house for some amount of time," Huffman continued.

This conversation will be off the record, as the team may discuss confidential details that should not be discussed with others

I bought a cream tart, but I requested a refund because it couldn't run Linux.

tinselpar, to technology in The people paid to train AI are outsourcing their work… to AI

The dead internet theory (wikipedia)

The dead Internet theory is an online conspiracy theory that asserts that the Internet now consists almost entirely of bot activity and automatically generated content that is manipulated by algorithmic curation, marginalizing organic human activity.

tinselpar, to technology in DuckDuckGo’s privacy-focused browser is available for Windows now

Blink is a fork of Webkit. And Webkit was the original rendering engine of Chrome, before Google replaced it with Blink. So the DuckDuckGo browser belongs to the chromium family.

EDIT: And Safari is a distant cousin of Chromium.
