I also found researchgate.net to be super useful during my master's research. They have a ton of free/open papers, and if you find a paywalled article they have a feature where you can message the authors directly asking for access.
Someone more knowledgeable than I might chime in and correct me, but my understand is this:
Kbin and Lemmy are both software...frameworks....architectures? (not sure the exact name for what they are) on the fediverse. They both have multiple instances within them (Lemmy has lemmy.lm, beehaw.org etc). Being on the fediverse they all can view and interact with content from each other.
Melm is an app specifically by Lemmy devs for Lemmy, so you can't use a kbin account on it, even though you can interact with Lemmy on kbin and vice versa.
Everything seems to be simultaneously overlapping, but disjointed.
