We have nothing to fear but boredom itself.

Well well, this is getting more interesting. Still not sure how this will play out. Mark Galeotti’s excellent book Putin’s Wars mentions several wannabe warlords whose escapades came to quick and bloody ends at the hands of Russian special forces or the FSB.

I’m actually a bit surprised Comrade Shitheel Prigozhin hasn’t met the same fate. Perhaps his Wagner wall of meat is still seen as having service to render to the Kremlin.

I don’t at all see Prigozhin as a leadership threat to Putin, but I like that he and Strelkov and Kadyrov are all busy trying to one up each other’s stupidity. I’m all for it as long as it hastens Russia’s battlefield defeat. If it leads to Russia’s decolonization, all the better.

Speaking of which, this is a fascinating project.

The John Oliver pics weren’t quite sexy enough today.

….with the unifying term The Feds being tossed around as well, though I’m not entirely sure I feel comfortable being associated with that word.

What a great article. Thanks for posting it. I plan on sharing it around.

The only issue I take is with the author’s use of the word “fool.” Higher or lower levels of intelligence/ability may exist and are obviously acceptable, but what worries me more than this are people who are bigoted or hateful and want to spread their (lack of) ideology.

Regardless, I think I get what the author is trying to say, and overall I think it’s a great message, and especially in these early post-Reddit days that many of us are currently witnessing.

I had my friendly neighborhood AI throw together a tl;dr just in case people don’t want to read the entire article, though I still recommend you do……

The article argues that the decline of online communities primarily stems from their refusal to moderate content, allowing disruptive elements to degrade discourse. It suggests that these communities initially view censorship as an unnecessary and harmful imposition, failing to see the danger of disruptive participants until it's too late.

This perspective is often tied to an egalitarian instinct to prevent leaders from becoming too powerful. However, this leads to a gradual decay of the community quality as higher standards members leave, and the overall fun and interest wane.

In the end, the author encourages members to trust their judgments when deciding to downvote low-quality comments, insisting that moderation isn't just about censoring; it's about maintaining the health of the community.

I completely agree and that’s exactly how I took it as well. That particular word gives the article a sort of light comedic feel that is appropriate to the writing tone.

It was written back in 2009, which was in no way in a time before bigotry, but my guess is if the author wrote the same piece today after seeing the global rise of the neo-fascist right, they may have targeted online hate specifically.

Can someone point me to any anti-racist or anti-hate Magazines if they exist?

If not, anyone want to create one?

I don’t feel knowledgeable enough either technologically or intellectually to do it, but if someone else wants to set up a Magazine, I’d love to join and to spread the message.

Haha aw man, there is some deeply tragic irony in this.

Two questions:

  1. Who do you think his Bono would have been back then?
  2. Do you think he was constantly writing letters with a feather pen complaining about his wagon wheels?
StaticBoredom,

Totally! I wasn’t annoyed or offended in the slightest. I thought it was amusing. As for Hamilton, I’ve been enjoying his less intense attitude since he stopped winning championships. Somehow it seems like he’s enjoying himself even more these days, despite how the current season is going.

lol. Perfect!

“ride sparingly”. Haha. Your comment got better on subsequent readings.

Hey Reddit, the Electronic Frontier Foundation would like a word with you (www.eff.org)

“After weeks of burning through users’ goodwill, Reddit is facing a moderator strike and an exodus of its most important users. It’s the latest example of a social media site making a critical mistake: users aren’t there for the services, they’re there for the community.”

StaticBoredom,
StaticBoredom avatar

I have not seen it yet, though I have no doubt that it exists.

I believe that in real life as in the fediverse, hate speech and bigotry of all kinds needs to be very firmly shot down. Immediately downvote and block that shit. It has no place here, or anywhere.

That being said, debating or even engaging with these pricks is worse than pointless because you’ll never change their minds and will only give them a platform.

Racist is racist. Fuck them. I have no interest in appeasing these people, and even if I did, it wouldn’t calm them down or make their hatred tolerable. Sexists, racists, homophobes and the lot should be shunned without compromise. As the saying somewhat goes, there should be no tolerance for intolerance.

@Kupo_Knight posted an article recently that I think is very relevant here:

I wholeheartedly agree, and it was the use of the word “fool” that was my only minor problem with the article, which is also what I expressed in the thread by @Kupo_Knight, to whom I’m grateful for posting the article in the first place.

As for your experience with your friend, that’s a touching story and I think you’re both lucky to share such close bonds of friendship. You handled it perfectly. Congrats.

Since kbin.social is exploding these days, perhaps what is most urgent is lump sum funding at buymeacoffee to cover any necessary hardware upgrades.

Down the road, some sustained funding will probably be necessary, but hopefully many other instances will be created so the load can be spread among many servers/devs.

I heard someone else mention Open Collective in another post. This sounds like a transparent and ethical way to raise sustained funding for kbin.
