ZahzenEclipse, to rant

Frustrated at moderation on reddit. It's a tale as old as time.

In a fun subreddit, a user mentioned that they didn't post original content. I made a throwaway comment that they shouldn't post content that isn't theirs. What I should have said is "post without attributing". Needless to say, mods replied to my back and forth and said it isn't against their rules. Then the mod finished that comment with a passive aggressive comment among the lines of "if you don't like it get out of here".

I responded "I won't tell users to not steal other content and repost it here with attribution since mods over here are okay with that" . I knew I was flying to close to the sub with that one but I don't feel like it was worthy of a permanent ban. Eitherway, I got banned and and muted immediately. I was definitely being passive aggressive and I'll even go as far as say a temp ban was probably warranted even though I still think it was ridiculous because my conduct wasn't too ridiculous. I was a hyperbolic for sure but I feel pretty strongly about attribution and not properly identifying content as not yours when posting other people's stuff.

Well, I did the unforgivable and messaged the moderator directly and essentially told them I disagreed with their moderation and they were acting like an authoritarian. I then sent a 2nd message apologizing because I could've handled the whole back and forth better. Those two messages to the mod, contained no threats or attacks, warranted a perm ban for harassment.

I needed to rant. I also would be open to other folks perspectives. I guess it may be hard to gage if I my actions warranted a perm ban from the site as a whole without seeing the exact messages and I could try to post them if anyone is interested.

I think I'll use this opportunity to attempt to change how I engage with social media broadly (admittedly, i argue with too many strangers on these platforms) and I spend too much time doom scrolling so im trying to take it as an opportunity for improvement.

That being said, I also think this opens my mind to moderation which can be abusive and squash opinions simply because they are opinions the people who have power don't like. Now, I don't think my story is the best one to highlight that but I feel like if the mod could've handled it better from the onset.

No, the irony isn't lost on me that my first post on another reddit like platform is about reddit. I won't lie, I am going to miss certain communities and it will hurt when i need specific life advice for hobbies or what have you so I am a little sad in that sense. Makes me wish I tried to get contact info for folks on other platforms or got into other spaces in case something like this happened but I never thought it would because I'm generally pretty respectful online.

Well if you made it this far in my sad boy rant, I appreciate it.
