@alexandra If you still have a code I wouldn't mind checking it out.

How do you actually create posts? I'm having a hard time understanding, because the one time I did it created a microblog instead.

I understand magazines are like subreddits and threads are posts, but how do I create them?

I'm used to seeing posts have their own commenting system etc like reddit, but if this is the "front page" of @redditMigration, how do I make it so it's easy to tell where one post ends and another begins?

@karbairusa You create a post by clicking on the little + in the top bar and selecting whichever variety of content you'd like to share.

Notably, "post" on kbin is a microblog (like a tweet); for instance, what I'm responding to right now is a microblog (aka, a post). Any of those other selections (well, except for creating a new magazine, haha) will get you something similar to a reddit post:

    • link
    • article
    • photo
    • video

@Otome@kbin.social I think you'd select "random" as your magazine. Be sure to use hashtags, as that is the main mechanism Mastodon uses to search for content.

@Otome@kbin.social I didn't use Twitter much. If you randomly posted about the game you were playing, would only the people who followed you see it? If not, then it would be like posting to random on the microblog tab. Random is a magazine filled with the posts pulled from the fediverse that didn't have a tag, or didn't have a tag that fit with any of the main (default?) magazines.

If you posted on mastodon.world "I'm playing this game" it would show up in the random magazine, under the microblog tab. If you posted "I'm playing this game" with the hashtag "gaming", it would show up in the microblog tab of any magazine that tagged itself with "gaming". When you make a magazine, you can choose the tags to apply to that magazine, and kbin then pulls in the posts will those tags from any federated server.

All these ActivityPub-based services are taking the same information and displaying it in different UIs. As I understand it, a thread from kbin shows up like a content-warning post on Mastodon; when you post with a content warning you get to choose a title. (I haven't tested this so take it with a grain of salt.)

Sorry about rambling a little haha.

are you implying that mastodon, for instance, can tag posts like we can here on kbin?

Yes that is exactly how it works. We're in the redditmigration magazine right now. Click over to the microblog tab and check out what services the people talking are on. I see some from Mastodon, some from kbin, and some from Lemmy.

That's what being "federated" means; Mastodon and Lemmy and kbin can all share data with each other. How the data is presented might be different depending on the service, though.

If you wanted to talk about what game you were playing, but you didn't want to make a whole thread about it, you could totally just make a post in a gaming magazine. If someone followed you from mastodon, your post would show up in their stream just like any other.

Does anyone know if there is a mobile app in the works? So far I’m liking the kbin experience. I just hope a mobile app comes in to make things a little smoother.

@Lyfa At https://kbin.pub it says the mobile apps are in the works.

How do Kbin and Lemmy work? Since they’re on fediverse, can I follow their “subreddits” from this account? Or do I need an account on a Kbin/Lemmy instance for that?
Can I follow Lemmy ‘subreddits’ from a Kbin account?

@luana Yes, you should be able to access Lemmy's "Communities" using Kbin, where they will behave exactly like Kbin's "Magazines". (both are equivalent to reddit's "subreddits") You should even be able to access the stuff people post via Mastodon, which will (as far as I can tell) show up in Kbin's "Random" magazine. I am posting from kbin right now, from its "Microblog" tab.

Trying to post for the first time. Here are my pups. I have no idea what I'm doing. What's this "select a magazine"?

@danchez1 Magazines are equivalent to subreddits, I think.
