Over the past 2 years, Republican-controlled states have been quitting the Electronic Registration Information Center like it's going out of style. Conspiracy theorists insist that it is some sort of liberal front for controlling elections. In reality, it is just a way of making sure that someone isn't registered to vote in two states at the same time. I'm just glad that Evers is there to veto the bill.

I don't have a say in the matter since I don't live in Milwaukee but I like what he's done so far. I look forward to 20 more years of him in office.

Theaters like The Oriental, The Downer, The Times, and The Avalon are damn treasures. Unlike Marcus and AMC theaters (with their dozen screens and acres of parking), the indie theaters were built at a neighborhood scale. I really like being able to walk or bike to a theater on a Sunday afternoon. In recent memory, we've lost The Downer, The Fox Bay, and the Rosebud. The Rivoli Theatre up in Cedarburg has stayed open by leaning on a committed group of volunteers and community fundraising. Last year, the folks who own The Fox Bay tried to get $773,000 from the Downtown Incentive Grant program to help pay for the renovation and reopening of it. This summer the Fox Bay Theater opened its doors for a short high school film festival. I'm hoping that non-profit community groups (like Milwaukee Film) and community involvement can save as many of these places as possible.

The beauty of the fediverse is that you are using lemmy, I'm using kbin, and the two interoperate. :)

Wisconsin sawmill has agreed to stop hiring children after a 16-year-old died on the job (businessinsider.com)

In July, 16-year-old Michael Schuls died of "traumatic asphyxia," according to the local coroner's office, two days after he became trapped on a conveyor for freshly cut stacks of lumber while working at Florence Hardwoods, the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported. His funeral was attended by "hundreds" of people, according to a...

Hearing on WE Energies Rate Hike for 2024 (Oct 9th) (cubwi.org)

There is a public hearing on Monday, Oct. 9 (2 p.m. or 6 p.m.) at Clinton Rose Senior Center if you want to voice your opinion of WE Energies' 2024 $86 million rate increase on electricity and $22.2 million / $23.9 million rate increase on gas. Every time I walk past that structure, I wonder why the performing arts center hasn't rebuilt it, yet. I guess if it is owned by the city, that would explain it.

I thought that he had passed, a while ago. 99 years is a good run.

Spay and neuter, folks!

The current museum is more than twice the size of the new building, which kind of bummed me out a little. It sounds like the new structure will be more efficient, though. The bulk of the collections at the current museum are used for research and are not on display but all those collections are now going to be visible from the exhibit floors so that the visitors can see them. I'm excited to see what's happening, next.

I backed the Kickstarter for them to open that place and then never went there. It's been on my to-do list for years.

"will be served by clean diesel buses until the batteries have been replaced"? Somebody invented a way of powering a diesel bus without burning diesel?

Going to Pius in the 90s, all of the windows were open after it started getting warm outside (since k12 schools don't seem to ever have AC). I could remember the constant sound practice over at the Milwaukee Mile. It would be neat to bring that back.

I just discovered that park recently. It's pretty nice.

Fewer CO2 emissions is a good goal if you are going to buy a car. Keeping it as long as possible is a better goal.

It was apparently a Sears for over 50yrs (only closing in the 80s). There were relatively recent plans to turn the building into an 80-room hotel (https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2019/03/27/eyes-on-milwaukee-old-sears-building-to-become-new-hotel/).

New layer of protection added to freshly painted bike lanes on Milwaukee's North Avenue (tmj4.com)

This is better than paint and posts but I remember when they put down concrete bariers protecting the bike lanes, further west of there, cars kept crashing into the barriers and that pushed the barriers into the bike lane itself. Whatever the perminant solution ends up being needs to accomidate for crazy drivers doing crazy...

The county has a hell of a lot of "deferred maintenance" that has piled up since 2002. $31.6M won't even put a dent in it but hopefully, they can deal with the worst of it.

TSA intercepts 2 guns, Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (fox6now.com)

I really don't understand the person who thinks "I accept that I can't wear my shoes through the scanners or bring a bottle of water but I'm sure they will be cool with my loaded gun." Do you think that you are going to need to shoot someone somewhere between the Chili's in Concourse C and the gate?

I remember meeting someone at the gate there as a kid (very pre-9/11) and remembering that I had a pocket knife on me. The security guy let me through with it because the blade was shorter than his thumb. These days, I have a backpack that is strictly used only for air travel and when I go to the airport, I don't even bring pocket change with me.
