I've found an excellent podcast series about how online companies use your data. The second episode of the new season is all about how social media giants gather data to keep you engaged, enraged and staying in their apps looking at ads.

It's presented in a pleasantly approachable way. The fediverse is mentioned (Flipboard), along with a new platform I haven't heard of, Small Town and the idea of the Pluriverse.

One of the exercises they do in the episode is pull down their data from Instagram (thanks GDPR!). I did the same thing last year and documented my findings - a real eye opener, and one of the reasons I'm now committed to the fediverse.

@lily I hope the realization didn’t set in until you got home so you didn’t worry about it!

Luckily the husband hasn’t noticed yet.

It’s usually Plex that gets a “jeeeeeffff” call down the hall. But it’s a book night so I’m in luck!

Have you ever stopped listening to or trusting a person who posts information in media, or online because of a "red flag" ?

That is are there certain topics, habits, actions etc. that instantly decrease your trust in a person you might have otherwise listened to on a podcast, article, or video?

Are there any "green flags" that build trust?

box464,
@box464@mastodon.social avatar

@futurebird A green flag is listening to those who participate alongside you. A like, a boost, a reply when the mood strikes. And their behavior when doing so. If the account is just them screaming into the void, I’ll pass.

@dtgeek I’ve been using DDG for a year and honestly can’t tell a difference - I don’t miss anything from Google. Gmail however…I’m still trying to unravel that one.

@dtgeek Yeah I should just move back to iCloud. I’m deep into Apple so that’s always going to be available. I tried proton mail but as you said, no imap and requires extra steps on various devices.

@mcc 95% chance it's an ad.

My political filters I've added to Mastodon are so good this latest news didn't make it through on my timeline. Heard about it from a co-worker.

@beardedtechguy Images with no matching alt text get through. I can live with it.

I login to a LOT of different Mastodon apps. Because of that, I had over 600 "authorized applications" on my account! 🤯

In certain apps, the SSO process creates a new "authorized app" every time you login instead of re-using the same one.

Anyway, I built a web browser dev tool script that iterates through them all and revokes access. I'm not sure if I should release it but it sure was useful for me.

Sounds like this issue will be going away in a future release! 🎉

box464,
@box464@mastodon.social avatar

@jraedisch Yep, I have several toy apps that use the Mastodon API in the same boat. I’m the problem, it’s me. 😅

Honestly as far as major web apps go, I think Elk is the only one writing back to a server.

If you've ever tried to implement an OAuth Application for Mastodon, and butted into the “unknown client_id / application” error, where the Mastodon server has silently deleted your OAuth Application….

I have good news for you:We've removed the OAuth Application Vacuuming from Mastodon: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/30316

As part of my husbandly duties, I am being asked to attend a pool party this afternoon with a bunch of people I do not know.

I will not be pooling. Small talk will be awkward. My vampirishly pale skin is already immolating just at the thought of being in the sun that long.

I have prayed and sacrificed to all known deities for rain or other calamity to no avail. Curses.

A pug (dog) has been placed in a tiny innertube in a pool. He is wearing a black and white striped bow tie for some reason. He is not amused.

I’m still here. Sweating, waiting, scrolling. But I’m here.

box464,
@box464@mastodon.social avatar

I made it through the party. Here's a few things to note:

  1. Don't introduce the gay couples to each other as if all gays have everything in common and will immediately hit it off, because, gay.

They are twinks that just finished a pride parade and are ready to go out on the town. We are a war torn old married couple ready for bed at 10 PM.

  1. I've recently lost a lot of weight, enough so that some old friends don't recognize me immediately. Here are things not to say or do:
  • "Oh shit! You used to be so FAT! Wow you look so much better!"
  • "How did you lose all that weight?" (Me: A combo of cancer and meds)
  • Touching my stomach or face
box464,
@box464@mastodon.social avatar
  1. I don't drink and I'm very calm and smile alot. I'm gay. Drunk women get a bit confused that I'm not matching their level or spewing rainbows and say things like "I just love your whole vibe, you just like, don't give a crap what anyone thinks! We need you in our group to balance us out." (The crazy? I'm not balancing out crazy, but thanks.)

@CodenameTim I hung out with the straight husbands by the grill which was shaded. Sweaty and hot, but not burned! I also learned how to grill corn with the shuck attached as a handle to turn it.
