I need your help ❤️

Over 4-5 days new server- and media storage bills are coming in for this month

Currently I am still over €428 short this month😿😟

For upcoming weekend I have a server migration planned to scale down the costs by another €200 on the main servers but that will only take effect next month

If you can, please help out 🙏

@stux Are you using cloud storage? I reckon you'd be better off with regular old dedicated bare metal servers. Ideally just one.

Unfortunately, it's a widely adopted format for any kind of information.

back before silly investors, Bitcoin was a feasible means of exchange!

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@kaia I still like the concept. It's just that (1) money must be regulated at least a little bit and (2) the transaction cost of Bitcoin is just too high.

I think GNU Taler is the better model. (Basically open source self hosted banks)

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@kaia It does not. But it's already in use at some Cafeteria in Geneva. So there's that.

@cliffwade Why on earth do you need an app to control a fridge?

fell,

@cliffwade Please also test how usable it is without the app and whether or not the app works without internet connectivity.

If I need to collect e-forms from people with confidential information on them, what's the best/responsible way to do it?

Is there an easy way to use for this?
Should they just email the forms? (But that's not encrypted, right?)

I have a fillable PDF form set up, but it's going to have legal names and bank accounts, etc. I need to keep that private.

Surely there is some standard practice for this kind of thing? 🤔

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@TerryHancock If you already have a PDF form, then just have a simple HTML5 upload form secured with HTTPS.

The most useless thing Steam does is show you that additional window with featured games or whatever, but never show it in the foreground, always in background of the actual client

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@solidsanek I actually like that. It's the most unobtrusive and gentle way to show ads. It's not even really ads. It's just like movie trailers in a cinema.

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@solidsanek Last time I checked you could still disable it.

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@solidsanek Sure, it's under "Interface" and then "Notify me about additions or changes to my games, new releases, and upcoming releases"

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@leyrer Es mag ungerecht klingen, aber ich glaube viele Leute machen beides. Also sie rennen einfach dem aktuellen Trend nach und machen damit Karriere.

fell, (edited ) to Matrix
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

Instant messaging is more complicated than you'd think. Sending a message from one device to another seems simple, but it's hard; especially on mobile. NAT, Firewalls, smartphone battery optimisation are all technical challenges, but then you also got user expectations. Users expect to see the same messages in the same order on every device. They want to be able to send photos, files, locations, voice messages and much more. On top of all that, full end to end encryption is a must have nowadays. Especially if you let average people run their own servers.

Matrix seems overly complex, but once you attempt to reinvent it, you end up with the same level of complexity.

delta, to random
@delta@chaos.social avatar

Often overlooked from our "but e-mail!" skeptics: Any sufficiently advanced P2P messenger will eventually re-invent a custom, partial form of e-mail ... because users want to communicate when their apps are offline or not foregrounded and active at the same time. See https://briarproject.org/download-briar-mailbox/ for a recent example.

Delta Chat goes the reverse route by providing a secure and interoperable e-mail based messaging experience and then adds P2P tech like https://webxdc.org on top.

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@delta @rakoo I think P2P messaging has too many hurdles to overcome and is a big technical challenge. First there is the NAT/Firewall problem and second there is smartphones' battery optimisers which essentially forbids keeping a connection at all times.

Come to think of it, I haven't used DeltaChat in over a year, but I love the idea. How does it handle mobile push notifications (if at all)?

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@delta @lyyn @rakoo I think the real reason is because (Android) smartphones want to suspend the actual CPU whenever possible and receive notifications via the less power hungry baseband modem. AFAIK it's capable of maintaining simple TCP connections on a very low level, which is what Google's FCM service is.

If this lands on your feed, tell me about different features that are just missing in Matrix.

It can be anything, but please don't include memes like "unable to decrypt message" or other things that are already in the works, or maybe has already been merged (e.g media captions)

Some examples include better forwarded messages, rich profiles, or a live location sharing, just to name a few.

(I am writing something about this, boosts appreciated!)

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@cyrus In terms of features it's almost complete IMO. It just needs stability, reliability and performance now.

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@cyrus It has already improved dramatically over the past 12 months, so I have no doubts that it will keep improving.

Of course, there is the neverending story of calls as well.

Ignore the dust. This is the unit bearing the front USB3 ports of my PC case, a CoolerMaster N400. When opening this, I thought I would find a circuit board that I can easily trace and solder. Nope. It's just a piece of black plastic held together by dark forces. The lower port is broken. It works if I bend it upwards with considerable force, but it doesn't stay like that. I assume it's a broken solder joint and there's still a PCB inside. I wonder if the plastic would be able to withstand 150°C or so for 10 minutes. Maybe I could try reflowing it with the case on?
