I do not need any new projects… but that new shiny PIC32CZ CA80 (aka SAME70 with PIC32 scribbled on the top in crayon) looks mighty tempting.

Also those new STM32H5 series chips…

I need to finish bashing rocks together in this C code. I need to re-layout and fab my “Jackson” SAML10 boards. I need to fab the fresh layout of the 32-pin GPIO expander boards. I need to make a test frame for the GPIO boards. I need to finish writing the code to test the Jackson boards on the test frame. I need to re-layout and fab the RasPi UPS board. I need to assemble the prototype power monitor board, then probably re-layout and re-fab. I need to get a bunch of ideas out of my head and into products, like the USB-C power unfuckenator.

Or I could just crash into bed because my hands have the jitters for some reason

dude.
if syno makes an s3-like offering that does that type of storage its going to greatly grease the skids for folks bailing from the cloud.

i have space in my rack at the colo, i'd buy a full on rackstation and top it out and shove it on 10 gig copper.

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@Viss they’re fucking garbage though - tend to eat all the data at the first sign of any issues, and stupid limitations in their software (eg your flash cache has reached an unspecified end of life, so I’m just going to offline the entire array)

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@Viss we’ve had so many issues with the 12-bay RackStations plus drive expansion trays we have at $DAYJOB, I’m glad they’re now Someone Else’s Problem. Even stuffing them full of RAM and flash caches they slow to a crawl with any reasonable load.

jpm,
@jpm@aus.social avatar

@Viss from memory, the 24 x 12TB 7.2kRPM RAID-10 array (which Synology buries deep in the setup for some reason, but friends don’t let friends use RAID-5) would start delivering 20ms IO latency at about 1000 array IOPS, 40ms at 1500, and 100ms at 2000.

Then there was the estimated 1 month rebuild time for a single failed 12TB drive, with associated 1000ms IO latency during the rebuild, because the settings they use for the underlying mdadm rebuild rate is very dumb. Fixing that brought the rebuild time down to about 3 days with about 20ms IO latency.
