indie gamedev is spending 3-5 years working on a game with probably at least a couple other people and then you release it and if youre fairly lucky you gross like 20-80 thousand US dollars which works out to $5000 a person a year before tax. it's a very cool and sustainable industry

@eniko The closest I’ve got to a hit is my racing game RC Rush which, after a year and a half in development (then another 4ish months porting to Xbox), managed to make two of us minimum wage for one year. The amount of hustle it took to get that was ridiculous, too! The system is messed up.

@Farbs I doubt it, but..I dunno! 🤷‍♂️ On PC, sales are a trickle - almost dead. Only enough to reach minimum payout $100 every two or three months. On Xbox, it’s doing $100-$200 per month (so, 50-100 each) which is a lovely bonus for the food bill at least!

@elFlashor @eniko Oh no I think the system is absolutely set up for us indies to fail. We’re only allowed to succeed if the platform providers succeed. Reality is, if you’re not a big publisher, or can’t find the ad budget or magically go viral big enough to bring them a hoard of customers, you’re going into the abyss. With almost zero discoverability. If your indie game isn’t already a hit before you launch, the system will do its best to make it disappear altogether!

Haven’t seen these before.. entirely paper cups, no plastic lid and a paper straw too, but shaped so that it works pretty much the same way in terms of keeping the drink in the cup (actually works better I think!).. I’d love to see more places do this and ditch the plastic lids.

@Dancer K, so, after you mentioned this I looked into it and… urgh.. I just found out about all the chemicals they put in the paper straws and cups and I’m not impressed! Apparently, they put more forever chemicals in straws than plastic has. I think we just need to go back to pottery and force people to take their own cups to put drinks in! 😵‍💫

@Dancer I mean, at least you won’t see as many plastic lids around the place so yeah it’s slightly better.. but still, I just expected the paper stuff to be better than this. Do they really need the chemicals?!

I am pleased to say that reinstalling Visual Studio fixed whatever the heck it decided to do earlier today and it's compiling again. What that was about, I've no idea. Best not to question it and just move on, I reckon..

@gilesgoat I've experienced the Android SDK. Every time I have to use it, I die a little inside. Whenever I'm done, it gets deleted from the machine in the hope I never have to see it again 👀

My installation of Visual Studio appears to have gone completely rogue. Nothing compiles any more, everything is broken with warnings everywhere and autocomplete is borked.. a repair didn't fix it, so I'm uninstalling the whole monstrous behemoth and starting again. I've barely used it for a good few months, so I have no idea what happened to it..!

All the talk about Xbox on my timeline reminded me that I (still) haven't submitted requests to be included in some upcoming promotion/sales on there. I've been meaning to do this for over a week now and just been putting it off because it's a chore.. finally got it done. Phew! Hopefully my games will be on sale later in the year..

I’d heard a couple of people say that Xbox was basically not worth aiming for anymore as an indie, unless they offer you a chunky Game Pass deal - which they probably won’t, unless you’re a known quantity by reputation or sales on other platform. Then, the new/current gen ones:
Xbox One Series S
Xbox One Series X

The series S is a cheaper/lower power version of the series X,. The ones without 'series' in the name are the last gen ones, but if you build for them, the builds will still run on the current gen 'series' ones! 🙄
