Playing Little Kitty Big City on Xbox and having a total blast with it. It’s really fun. Now, I’m sure someone’s made this joke before, but it’s the best joke I’ve made all week so I’m gonna say it anyway … it’s a meow-troidvania! 🤣🤣

I used to love the movie Trading Places, but I can’t watch it any more because it’s 2024 and I now know there’s just no way a super rich person could ever become a decent person 🤷‍♂️ It’s just too unbelievable.

I’d like to say a big ‘fuck you very much’ to Rare (or whoever publishes their stuff) for giving Goldeneye to digital owners of Rare Replay but NOT to physical owners. I have the disk, but the only way I get to play Goldeneye is if I re-buy the whole Rare Replay again digitally. #xbox

Surfing is something I'd love to learn how to do and I've always wanted to. I tried it a few times when I lived in Devon, but drank more water than I surfed on. Maybe one day I'll live in the right place at the right time to learn to do it right? At my age, it's unlikely, but hey I still hope maybe one day..

There's a surfing video on Red Bull TV called Temporal Collection. It's a really nice, ambient journey, with some amazing music in it. Sometimes, I just put it on the projector in the background as a mood setter. Really chilled. I don't know if it's region locked or anything, but here's the link anyway, incase it might be your vibe.. https://www.redbull.com/ca-en/films/temporal-collection

Since it was 50% off, I decided to take the plunge and upgrade from Affinity Designer v1 to v2. I hope all of the people jumping ship from Photoshop will also dive into this awesome software and take advantage of the discount!

Imagine if all the churches started preaching about the climate emergency, wearing masks during the pandemic, reducing the number of cars on the road, holding the government accountable, taxing the rich, rejecting Conservatism, stopping funding for wars and other things that could actually do good, help people to have better lives and to be kinder to each other. I mean, instead of all that ‘let me tell you a story about how you burn in hell, sinners’ bollocks.

I've had web hosting for 20+ years and given how much cheaper all the components in the service have gotten in that time (CPU cycles, bandwidth, storage), by rights we should by now all have our own hosting for federated services for pennies or bundled with our internet service. Why is it still so expensive? I used to run databases on a potato compared to now

@sinbad I feel this. It's hosting renewal time for me, so I'm preparing for a fleecing.. 👀

I can be all clever about games and that, but at the end of the day this revs my motor… new monster truck game from Milestone? Oh yes. I literally bought Monster Jam for my PS2 recently just so I could do this sort of stuff! Can’t wait for it and hope this is a return to monster truck game greatness!.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7H2vPVzl9A8&t=89s&pp=2AFZkAIB

I wonder what's the most technically influential videogame of all time? I mean, a game that if you removed it from history then hundreds of other games over many different genres would suffer without the systems it introduced etc. You know, like an rpg that brought games a health 'number' rather than just 3 lives, or a game that pioneered the use of two joysticks etc.?

BTW: I don't have any good answers to this, but if someone could just give me academic tenure or a big wedge of cash to research this stuff, I'm sure I could ... 🤣 🤪

@Praxismapper Yeah I don't know if there was anything between the old style of 3d maze game and then free movement in doom or not.. I can't think of anything, anyway. I think that was a huge step. We'd had FPS before, in mazes, but not free roam like that as far as I know.

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@patrickmcurry @Praxismapper Hovertank 3D .. Battlezone meets 3d Monster Maze?! 🤔 Interesting you mention the advancement of tech because the two go hand in hand for some major steps forward in games, right? It almost becomes the first to utilize the tech as much as the first to come up with something innovative.. although utilizing the tech IS innovative, so I don't want to belittle it, but you know what I mean?

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

.. also there’s no way of telling which games influenced which other games, of course, it’s all speculation unless the creator explicitly said “I made this because of this” like. We lose so much game history over time .. there can never be enough books, interviews or articles about them in my opinion!

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@patrickmcurry @Praxismapper Ah I missed out on Atari computers so that whole world is new to me. I had Sinclair and BBC at home, then an Amiga until PCs became a thing. Sadly didn’t get to experience much of the Atari machines other than the 2600. Just looked up Wayout and oh wow! That’s stunning for 1982! 😵‍💫

I need a new game idea notebook. My old one is full! 😲 Granted, there’s a lot of rubbish ideas and some I’ve since discovered other people have beaten me to.. but it’s fun going back and reading through them all, trying to imagine how they’d play. I write them all down, no matter how bad. No idea gets left behind!

I keep an Xbox dev kit on my desk, even though I'm not currently working on an Xbox game. I should probably put it away in a cupboard until I am working on an Xbox game again, but it looks cool and reminds me that I (me! little me in my house with no money and all self taught) can make games for consoles! And that's actually pretty darn awesome, I reckon. So, it's like a little ego boost.. is that vain? 🤔

psychicparrot42,
@psychicparrot42@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@sinbad Aw mate cheers. I know the console makes me feel like a 'real' dev, but I'll never be as hardcore as you in that respect. I'm Dr. Kludge! The stuff you do with code is magic that my primitive chimp brain could never comprehend. You, to me, are a wizard.
