Was reading Paul Thurrott's defense of Microsoft's Recall feature.

If there was ever an example of a journalist who has lost sight of his objectivity, this is it.

Goes on about how we all over-reacted, and how had nothing but good intentions, and that we should all just trust Microsoft to A) keep our data secure and B) to never upload the data from Recall onto their servers. Because we all *Know MS is very trustworthy.

Looks like he did come around a bit, but his latest premium article on the nonsense is still a bit too "I trust Microsoft" for me.

For those of you who have used urbackup, does it work with multiple sources? i.e. multiple clients backing up to the same server?

Been a bit, but here's a Check in.

Another month and I will be at an entire year on . Still loving it, and have no real plans to leave. Though at the 2 year mark, I may check out Aeon, or whatever they're calling it.

No pod this week. We're short a host. I may stream a bit tonight, but I'll let you know for sure if that happens.

Hey folks!

Took the week off, mostly, from making videos. A little bit of a break for me. I'll be back to doing my normal thing starting tomorrow with the podcast. I have some good stuff coming up!

So I've been using an Alice layout #keyboard for several months. I really like it, but I've never had a wrist rest that fits it. I've just used a standard straight edge wrist rest. But I just got a walnut rest that is shaped for this board, and goodness does it change the typing experience. It's so cozy.

For those of you who run Windows with a Linux-based homelab, what do you use to perform automatic backups of your Win11 PCs onto your homelab? I really don't want to use Sync thing, because I don't want something running all the time. I'd love something like Rsync or timeshift.

I really like Kavita for self hosting ebooks, manga and comics.

I do not like that every e-book is considered a series, even if the book isn't part of a series. The developer obviously didn't think they'd ever support books. They, at least the one on Discord, also seemed to think the decision was final. Which seems an odd hill to die on, iff'n you ask me.

I can live with it, but it feels odd that every John Grisham book gets its own Series page. I may just make a John Grisham series.

@janov911 I really don't like how Calibre messes with the file structure, so I've avoided that.

@janov911 at least the desktop version creates a new directory for every book.

Often times I have more fun trolling around Reddit for books to add to my TBR than I actually do reading the books on my TBR.

What a day.

So. Finally got two of my four NVMe drives up and running in proxmox on my homelab. Setting them up as an LVM together did not work, but I'm a noob there, so I'm not that surprised. I also chose not to do ZFS because there isn't a good option that doesn't eat half the space.

So I just have two separate volumes that I can use. Not the greatest, but it'll work.

Right now, everything seems to be back working the way it should. Here's hoping it stays that way.

thelinuxcast, to random
@thelinuxcast@fosstodon.org avatar

This should have been a simple operation. Shut the home lab down. Pull the cables out of the back, put in the new pcie cards with the added storage, and then put it all back together. Instead it's been one problem after another and for no reason that I can figure out.

one drive in my jbod enclusure wasn't showing up. Why? Nobody knows. A hard reset (which is just a great thing to do) seemed to have fixed it, but for how long?

thelinuxcast,
@thelinuxcast@fosstodon.org avatar

@JayLittle I have backups, so it wouldn't be a horrible thing to lose it. But I'd be pissed because it's brand new

thelinuxcast,

@james Apparently.

Now none of my external hard drives will connect at all.

What is going on? Did I piss someone off today or what?

I think it's time for a break.

thelinuxcast, to random
@thelinuxcast@fosstodon.org avatar

What a pain in the rear.

So first, I bought 4 nvme drives, and 2 nme pcie cards.

One card was great. One ended up being for two different types of nvme/sata drives, so didn't work. (the description was dead wrong, so wasn't fault).

Then, had to figure out how ot set up bifurcation.

Did that after some frustration, and then found that virtualization was turned off somehow in the process. Had to fix that.

Then got everything booted up, and the UUID of all my external drives changed.

Got bifurcation working, but now Virtualization is off. What is wrong with me today? Tech just hates my guts

thelinuxcast,
@thelinuxcast@fosstodon.org avatar

@blaise for me it just got turned off

thelinuxcast, to random
@thelinuxcast@fosstodon.org avatar

I hate nvme and pcie. I hate computers. I'm going to go live in the woods.

Bought another pcie nvme expansion card, this time for the correct slot. And the homelab still will only see one of the two nvme drives. ffs

thelinuxcast,
@thelinuxcast@fosstodon.org avatar

Got it fixed. Now IDK if I'll be able to add the other two drives I have or not, but that's future Matt's issue. I can always put those in my main PC.

Glad I no longer pay for Spotify. Heard they raised prices again today

I'm going to continue to look for ways to get rid of as many subscription services as I can.

thelinuxcast,
@thelinuxcast@fosstodon.org avatar

@egeexyz If I can find out if something like AdGuard will work or maybe pihole, and not get blocked by YouTube, I will probably go away from YT premium too. Only because it's only a matter of time before Google raises prices too
