Interpretation that sound is sentience is a super duper big jump. Plants do not have brains, nervous systems or nerve endings in which to feel pain or procress the world around them. Humans and animals react the same to pain by bleeding, fleeing or attacking the source. Making it a reasonable assumption that pigs dislike pain as much as I do, and since I know it is wrong to harm other humans for my own pleasure, I know it is wrong to harm animals for my pleasure of the taste of their bodies.

Perhaps plants are secretly aware in some way that we can no detect. But it’s absolute intellectual dishonesty to compare a pigs awareness of the world to that of grass.

Furthermore, animals eat way more plants than the calories people get from eating animals. So, even if we hypothetically pretend like we know that plants suffer, it is still much more net suffering than if we just eat the plants directly.

In my opinion, so much worse than an early death is the life of suffering that is generally imposed on animals in the farming industry. So, really, it isn’t just the pain of dying for the tasty 30-minute happy meal, it is a life of horrific suffering. Quite frankly, there are now alternatives that are every bit as delicious that don’t come along with a meter-long list of drugs specifically designed to increase the profits of the billionaires that trick average people into munching on their hot dogs.

kozy138,

Plants feel pain too? Vegans disliked this.

The article doesn’t say that plants feel pain. Even if they do, animals eat tons of plants to be fattened up, so it would still be much more net suffering to consume animals over plants.

These sort of “gotchas” sound like republicans. More interested in pointing out nonsensical hypocrisy of those helping others instead of doing so yourself. All in service of not questioning any of the things you were brought up to believe.

some_guy,

“If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason.”

Pirasp,

Yes, trees for example make a loud cracking sound
