AlternateRoute,

In general ordering direct and doing pickup is WAY cheaper than any of the delivery options.

AlternateRoute,

Not factoring in the monthly fee? Cost per Oder ? Tip?

Most restaurants you call ahead and just pickup your order when it is ready. Gas food places almost all have online order apps to do the same.

It is convenient but if you are using these services multiple times a month you are spending WAY more on dining out

Google Pay is officially dead in the US. Just got the email.

We are writing to inform you about changes to your Google Pay experience. As we continue to provide safe and seamless payments to users around the world, we are also simplifying the app experience in the U.S. For years, Google Wallet has been the primary place to securely store payment cards used for tap and pay in stores,...

AlternateRoute,

So use google wallet…

Instead of rebranding / upgrading one product, Google continues to make new products and have awkward migrations between them.

What is it about the text messages and emails sent by older people that make me feel like I'm having a stroke?

Maybe they're used to various shortcuts in their writing that they picked up before autocorrect became common, but these habits are too idiosyncratic for autocorrect to handle properly. However, that doesn't explain the emails I've had to decipher that were typed on desktop keyboards. Has anyone else younger than 45 or so felt similarly frustrated with geriatrics' messages?

@asklemmy

AlternateRoute,

All of my kids messages are super short or emoji filled, my wife, friends and older contacts all text to text me full paragraphs or sentences.

Need some examples

AlternateRoute,

Internet is dominated by Netscape, then crushed by MS giving its browser away… Firefox steps in for a while and is great but starts to suck / get slow, google steps in people start to shift to google, everyone is on google… Wonder who steps in next.

AlternateRoute,

There’s a lot more vendor lock in than there has been in the past. I don’t see there being a major change without legislation

LOL no… ActiveX on IE was the ultimate lock in, and that is gone now… Also we have A LOT of chromium based clones that don’t have these restrictions… It will still be a popularity contest.

Firefox however is limited by its in ability / unwillingness to license or implement some DRM features / Codecs which kind of sucks.

AlternateRoute,

True… but you can install content blocker plugins on iOS now from the app store and as far as mobile goes Android offer an alternative.

AlternateRoute,

There wasn’t any h265 support until recent nightlies for windows… so there is that issue. Which is important for watching movies ore even some NVR / Security cameras these days for anything 4K or higher.

AlternateRoute,

Or just use a chromium fork that allows ad block plugins…

ELI5 due to my smooth brain with these concepts

Database is a broad term, nearly any computer system that stores structured data like lists of names or transactions has a database of some kind. Dedicated database platforms like MySQL just make it more efficient / faster / easier to query and store data.

AlternateRoute,

I would be MORE surprised if they where still there.

Dr. Pulaski Appreciation Post (startrek.website)

I don’t know whether it’s a popular opinion or not, but I think Dr. Pulaski was a great character and I found her much more interesting than Dr. Crusher. I don’t know if it was down to the writing or the performance but Pulaski is one of the best parts of season 2 and I would have been happy to see her character continue....

AlternateRoute,

I am somewhat neutral on her, when she was introduced I kind of felt she was a gender swapped bones to setup the bones / spock dynamic but with data.

Sadly the only thing I remember her for is being mean to data, getting rapidly aged, and replacing Picard’s heart, that is 3 out of 22 episodes she is credited in.

For me Crusher vs Pulaski somewhat comes down to bedside manner/ compassion. Pulaski just comes across as a bit blunt and prickly at times and Pulaski just has fewer memorable episodes due to only having the one season.

AlternateRoute,

Heavy equipment is the one area that Hydrogen makes a lot of sense due to the space it takes up and its power density.

However producing the Hydrogen both CLEANLY AND AFFORABLY is still a challenge.

Loblaws, Sobeys owners under investigation by Competition Bureau for alleged anti-competitive conduct (www.cbc.ca)

Canada’s Competition Bureau has launched investigations into the parent companies of grocery chains Loblaws and Sobeys for alleged anti-competitive conduct, court documents reveal, with Sobeys’ owner calling the inquiry “unlawful.”...

AlternateRoute,

What not including the 3rd major player Jim Pattison Group (Overwaitea/SaveOnFoods)? I can’t imagine they are not also involved… We only have 3 major players like we have 3 major telecoms in Canada.

AlternateRoute,

Proton is built on top of wine for windows compatibility. The wine project has been very careful to independent build its compatible versions of libraries. There should be no Microsoft code in wine.

AlternateRoute,

That looks like a cell tower list not a list of alternatives.

Mobile network operators (MNOs)

Nearly everything is owned by Bell, Telus, Rogers and if you travel roam they end up being your national roaming option with most of the other options.

AlternateRoute,

Interesting how MS is the reasonable one here where all their copilot stuff clearly separates paying business from free consumer stuff for training / not training.

However slack has gone and said they will train on everything, and ONLY the paying companies can request to opt out.

Too bad so sad for all those small dev teams that have been using the “free” version of slack… No option to opt out.

I know that naming variables is one of the biggest unsolved problems of Computer Science but how would you name a boolean flag to be self explanatory?

What I mean is: some boolean flags are perfect for the real world phenomenon they are representing e.g. is_light_on makes you understand perfectly that when it is true the light is on and when it is false the light is off....

AlternateRoute,

Other states are irrelevant only the true condition implied matters, it is or isn’t that one state.

is_person_standing, is_standing, bStanding all tell you if someone is standing or NOT standing. Nothing else period. It does not matter if there could be other states as the test is one specific case.

I had QC 2s and liked them a lot. I tried out the Sony ones as well which are very good.

However these days I have Air Pod Pros which are easier lay down on a pillow with and also have excellent noise cancelling.

Full headphones can get hot and uncomfortable in warm weather, so I prefer earbuds these days.

AlternateRoute,

I don’t “LIKE” Loblaws but the majority of items I purchase are notably cheaper there than Sobeys stores or Jim Pattison Group owned stores IE the majority of the alternatives.

I use Costco a lot and more and Walmart more and more for groceries these days…

Remember when everyone used to shout buy Canadian?

To save you going 5 min into the video… He was using an adapter with zigbee2mqtt that was listed as experimental.

It is less about the network adaptor and more that he switches from zha to zigbee2mqtt with the skyconnect / homeassistant adaptor that is still not fully supported in zigbee2mqtt.

Using a coordinator more central to your network can help but as long as a large number of your powered relay devices have a strong connection there isn’t anything wrong with using the USB ones.

The ONLY issue with the USB ones is that it is recommended you put them on an extension cable as the USB port it self can cause interference, and putting a little distance from the antenna helps.

So his solution DOES all that, and is a good solution, but I wouldn’t just go toss your USB stick in the bin…

AlternateRoute,

If you are using a supported NON experimental adaptor / chipset and you have powered devices with strong connections to it, you should be fine. The only optimization I would do is put your USB stick on an extension cable and get it a little ways away from the computer as when they are jacked directly into a pi/computer the USB port can actually cause a little interference.

AlternateRoute, (edited )

He opens the video with “over the years I have used ZHA and Zigbee2mqtt” so I made a little assumption. but that makes it worse if he was already using Zigbee2mqtt when he picked up the Sky Connect and didn’t check compatibility.

Sears From A Joke Being Torn Down (lemmy.world)

American comedian Ron White frequently tells a story about how his van was damaged in a comedic way by the technicians at a Sears Automotive Center in Savannah, GA. This week, that Sears Automotive Center is being torn down. While the shopping mall that former Sears location is a part of is otherwise doing well, the Sears has...

AlternateRoute,

Ya, Amazon dominated by going from books to everything. However more importantly the put warehouses and distribution EVERYWHERE… It used to take 2-4weeks domestically to buy something mail-order or on line. It was amazon that got us down to 3 days, next day, then same day for online orders.

Back in 1993 Sears had this ability… I used to remember my mom shopping from the catalogue and driving in to the closest little Sears pickup location which where everywhere like little UPS stores etc. Hell further back in time you could order a house from Sears.

In hind sight, if Sears still had its credit division and distribution network it would have been able to take on modern online buy now pay later services and been able to out deliver amazon.
